SOURCE: 650 V-Star Classic Bike goes into gear but won't move

Known issue with the 650 vstars...no recall from yamaha though. The drive shaft splines are **** and they shear off on the shaft and the side that goes in the gearbox. Gearbox (rear drive unit) = $825 Shaft = 160. Have to buy the gearbox as a whole because yamaha is greedy.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part and/or the notation "Not Available" is in the description, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

80w-90 hypoid gear oil. A synthetic oil will cause less friction and less heat build up in the rear end , extending the life of an expensive part

Yamaha V star Final Drive shaft

The drives for a 650 and an 1100 are different part numbers, so it probably wouldn't fit.

However, you can buy what parts you need to replace here:

2004 Yamaha V star not driving.

it sounds like you either blew out something in the gear case (pinion gear, ring gear, etc) or there is an issue with the midshaft/driveshaft. Raise the back of the bike up, put it in N, and rotate the tire, pinpoint where the clatter is coming from. My VStar 1100 did this, and I ended up getting a replacement used gear case for about 300 dollars.
The bad news is that if the problem is farther up in your drivetrain (in the transmission, or in the engine case) that will become a costly repair. With the bike raised up, carefully put it in 1st gear and observe if the driveshaft is turning....if it turns, that is a good sign, and helps to show that the problem could be in the gear case.
Use a digital camera when you start taking things apart so you have a reference to use when you put it back together.

Transmission and oil leaking in to oil pan under a 1999 jeep no seeable leak points but its a class 2 leak ( drips forming but no puddle under the vehicle)

There are three places above that pan that the leaks could be coming from. 1- Tail shaft of the transmission.Would be a red color. 2-3- Input and Output shafts on the transfer case. More the color of motor oil. There may be more oil in that skid pan just not at the correct angel to let it run off.

My '04 v-star 650 feels like it has no transmision. it will click into every gear, but when i give it throttle all i hear is grinding, and there is no movement at all. i don't belive the trans is gone...

I believe you can see the actual shaft for the shaft drive spin. If you start the motor and put it in gear and see the shaft spinning the problem is a stripped pair of gears in the final drive. Compare the cost of the pieces (plus labor) to the entire assembly, the assembly will probably be cheaper. If you can not see the shaft just check the oil in the final drive for metal chips. A worst case scenario , your engine case has metal chips ( That might cost more.).
