Starter is kicking over, engine is trying to fire up but just backfiring. checked leads and plugs all look to be in working order. fuel pump is working fuel is getting to carbs and they seem to be working fine. i'm wondering where to look next?
I stored my bike for about 4 months and didn't put any stabilizer in the tank. It was in a covered parking ramp away from the elements. Now it won't start. Can't be anything electrical. Not getting any gas. What do I do?

carbs cleaned, fuel pump checked and 100% fuel petcock checked and 100%, fuel in tank, ignition system works as had it running from jumper cables, battery is dead.carbs cleaned, fuel pump checked and 100% fuel petcock checked and 100%, fuel in tank, ignition system works as had it running from jumper cables, battery is dead.

My '89 FZR sometimes starts fine and sometimes doesn't. When it does not, i noticed that the number one cylinder does not fire (thru exhaust headers #1 being cold). What could be the problem here? I've checked all the leads & the plugs.
I just helped my buddie work on his bike with the same problem an i have to pull off the coils an clean all the ends were it grounds an put it all back to gether an make sure the plug wires are all getting good conection on the plugs an it fired rite up after him messing with it for 2 weaks
left ignition coil goes to #1 & #4 plugs while right ign coil supplies 2 & 3;
presence of spark on each and all of the plugs;
temporarily remove the air cleaner/filter box/assembly and cover each crb opening with the palm of your hand while cranking. presence of gas would be noted with fuel on your palm;
engine flooded. remove, clean, dry/replace plugs.
Incidentally, if no spark on plugs, check connectors to CDI, or starting with the clutch lever pulled.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

If every thing seems to be in order, spark, etc. , try spraying some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb and see if it fires up. The problem could be a dirty carb. Does the carb have needle valves on it? I don't know this engine so I'm giving general advice. If it does fire up when you spray carb cleaner in the carb, try using a fuel system cleaner in the gas tank, and spray the crab cleaner in the carb to get it started. change the gas filter.
Starter circute on all vehicles has a power wire from there that puts power ONLY to firing the engine.IF this circut is broken,no power to start while cranking.Use a jumper wire to the power(+) side of coil and crank with starter button.Should start straight away.That's your wiring.Only other thing could be plugs are not firing under that light load with electric starter,but WILL fire when kick started.Try a plug change.It's happened with me before.
KICK HARDER TRY PULL STARTING IT..IN SECOND GEAR..DOES IT HAVE ENOUGH COMPRESSION TO START?IT SHOULD START PULLING IT...START OFF WITH NO THROTTLE THAN IF NOT STARTING CRACK THE THROTTLE SO LIGHTLY AND SHE SHOULD FIRE OFF WHILE IN GEAR BEING PULLED OF COURSE BE CARE FUL NOT TO RUN INTO. WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..
Your bike has a diaphragm on the carb. Every time you twist the throttle a shot of gas goes into the cylinder. Chances are you are flooding the engine by twisting the throttle too often. Flooding can create a backfire. Start with a clean dry plug. Twist the throttle once then leave it alone for about six kicks. Repeat the process if needed.
Hi I am vortash sounds to me like an ignition lead short check that the leads on the pot are not sparking to earth effectively cutting off the spark to one cylinder ( electricity takes the shortest point to earth so wont reach the plug if sparking to the cylinder ) I think youll find if it was the Kick stand sensor it wouldnt even fire up .. ? check all your HT circuit for damp or damaged leads .. hope this is of help regrads Vortash
Could be low compression due to head gasket leak, worn piston rings. Or bad spark due to dirty plug, wrong gap, plug breaking down, lead or cap breaking down, ignition fault. Choked air filter, fuel filter. Try these in easiest order I.E. remove air filter and see if it starts easier, do a compression test, cahnge plug, lead cap. Check the fuel filter. I am sure it's a simple solution.(high milage engines tend to be difficult to start so take this into account)
It would appear that you have two (2) issues:
1. wont even crank - Due to the massive current required by the starter a component is installed between the starter button and the starter. This component then switches the battery to the starter motor. In cars this is the starting solenoid, in most bikes, this is the starter relay. Normally in the starter relay there would be 2 big terminals for the battery and the starter motor cables with 2 smaller wires for the starter switch and ground. Try this - try pushing the start button with the headlights on, if the headlight dims considerably, then the starting relay is good and the motor is bad; on the other hand if the headlight dims just slightly or not at all, it is the starting relay (the one with the clicking sound). I was made to understand that there was a recall order due to starter relay and/or 30 amps breakers.
On the other hand, most starter motor problems could be: 1. the bearings/bushings at the ends of the armature; 2. carbon brushes; 3. commutator segments (the multiple small copper plates that the brush contacts with).
However, it may be to your advantage to simply replace the motor should it be deemed defective, difficult to secure parts or not economically reasonable to go down component level repair.
2. backfires dies under load - There are 2 major requirement for a gasoline engine to run, fuel and ignition. Backfiring is normally indicative of poor fuel to air mixture (most likely) and/or slightly off ignition firing (just a possibility). Areas to check are you air filter, carbs, plugs, intake manifold, seals/locks.
