Dan, this sounds like your battery may be the culprit. The starter drains any power the battery has left. Bump starting does not require power from the battery, DO NOT try to jump it from a car!

your bike should be a 1992. You go by the 10th digit, and you can find VIN charts online to tell you the year of the corresponding letter. Starting in 2001, it switched to numbers. The number in the 10th digit corresponds to the last digit of the year.
