Daytona 650 Dies At Idle

Hey Guys, I'm new to the forum, thanks in advance for all the help! Okay, I have an 05 daytona 650, 12k miles on it, I also have a radar detector hard wired in(fused of course) which I UNPLUG after I turn the bike off, not just turn the off switch. It has ran perfectly fine up until about two months ago, here is the rundown: The battery was due for a service, so I bought a new one from the local dealer and installed it. No problems whatsoever. I then changed my oil with full synthetic. No problems again. About two months ago, The bike began dying at stoplights intermittently, whenever I let the throttle off to idle. I can keep the throttle back and the bike stays alive, but as soon as I let off, it dies. It starts up fine and idles excellent cold and idles at lights fine sometimes. It is not a consistent problem. I figured it may be an air filter or spark problem, so I replaced both. I put iridium plugs in and the problem went away for about a day. I pulled the plugs and none were fouled, and all were properly gapped. I put them back in and made sure that the coils were pushed down and the plugs torqued. Still, it dies at stoplights. I pulled the plugs and put stock plugs in (new ones, not iridium) and exchanged the battery for a new one. Still dies at idle. Note: The check engine light is on, so I took it to my dealer and the only code it was throwing was for 'secondary air injection'. Here is the weird part: It will always have problems starting after I fill it up with gas, no matter how much or how little I put in. It will BARELY crank over, and then it will not idle, only die immediately. I have to hold the throttle back to keep it alive after gassing up. Also, if I pull the throttle to give it gas to start my speedo will always read '0' when I start riding. Another curious question: When I turn on the ignition the tach needle jumps VERY quickly all the way up, then all the way back. It does not go up and back smoothly. Only a quick jump. Is this normal? Thanks!

The latest BIKE magazine throws this up as a common problem. they say it is the idle control valve. its responsible for keeping the bike running at idle. they say it is a easy fix though, only about 6 pounds for a replacement.

I have a 05 like wise and the tack does the same think when I turn on the ignition, so all is good there. The intermittent death at lights seems like it could be caused by a vacum problem. If there is a loose hose or slight crack etc. that can cause a rough idle and a stall which will not be the case at anytime other that idle time. This could be the reason why the code come up with an "air" lose of sorts which is not very specific. S/M

First thing that came to my mind is the AIC Valve, If it's not that, you may want to check out the idle control system (I forget what it's called.... I can check if you want.) It's attached to the throttle bodies on the right hand side and it's basically a set of motors (maybe part of the choke system) My bike is throwing a code for it, and it will die every once in a while (still can't ride it, but at idle) And if I hold the throttle open at all, it'll be fine

1997 Triumph Daytona 955i. When my engine is getting to temperature it stalls and dies. Why is that please?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

Sounds like fuel starvation or Idle Air Control. I found this

Reader query: Triumph Daytona 955i ignition problems

I have a 1999 Triumph Daytona 955i. It refuses to tick over when started from cold. After a couple of miles down the road, it seems fine. If I restart it before it gets cold it's OK. If I leave it longer than maybe an hour then the same problem occurs.

Willblues, MCN forum.
It sounds like it's running extremely lean. There's an initial check you can do yourself on the idle air control. It regulates the air from the airbox into the motor and you can get at it in the airbox. Remove the fuel tank and airbox and you should see a little plastic housing that pokes into the airbox with a little white disc that should rise and fall in response to throttle movement. The only problem with this is the FI management light will stay on after, until it has cycled three times.
If that doesn't sort it, you'll need to get a dealer to run a diagnostic check on it to see if it has the correct map and idle fuel trim.

I own a triumph 2005 daytona 650.could anyone tell me if the engine light, flashing oil display and oil light being apparent, is normal when turning the key,not actually starting it

Not sure about the 650, but on my 04 Daytona 600, is does the same thing, this is the engine check lights, and oil low lights being checked. IF you tried to start the bike it wouldnt, until this sefl test is complete.

Hope this helps.

Remove seat & unbolt the bracket at rear of tank from frame.
Turn off fuel (not prime position) &remove hoses
Lift rear of tank & wiggle backwards to remove (making sure to disconnect any wiring to fuel sensor from under tank)

Hope this helps (if so please mark as very helpful)

Start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, if you would follow the big red cable from the battery's + terminal, it would go to one terminal of the starter relay. The other terminal of this relay would then go to the starter motor. It would look something like the image below.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
