2004 Harley Davidson XL 883 Sportster Logo
Posted on Apr 04, 2012

I have a 2002 883 sportster with a dyna 2000 p ignition. It will stay running for long sometimes and other times I can drive all day. When I'm driving down the road it just shuts off and won't restart. If it does restart it is only momentarily. I have checked when it does this and it is not sparking. This normally happens on hotter days as opposed to cooler days. Any ideas?

SOURCE: My Bike shut down while it was running fine!!

Check the voltage at the battery w/ a voltage meter...4 bucks at Harbor Freight...I doubt you have enough voltage to spin the starter. To prove my point put some jumper cables on the batt hook to a 12 volt source, cycle ,car, truck (engine off on donor veh)..should fire up..check tightness of all batt connections...I had a battery die right in the middle of a ride one time, and it was a harley....so if it starts w/a jump, time for a new batt...good Luck to you friend.....Tim

It is a Harley, what did you expect? Just kidding, look for fuel flow issues, like filters. The key to this issue is exactly what the cut out is like....if it is sharp, perhaps with backfire, look at ignition components. Overheating is an issue.

if the cut out is smoother or anaylog in nature, look for fuel and filter issues.

SOURCE: Check Engine light stays on. Has been fine up

If you put the key into your ignition, find your trip button on the back side of your speedo.turn the run stop switch to run, push the trip button in and hold it and then turn on your ignition, an set of letters will show up firs will say diag, click the trip button one time, then it will say P S SP E. the top portion of the e will be missing. the P will be blinking. push and hold and another set of letters and numbers will show up starting with a letter P and 4 numbers after that (ex P0134). be sure to have a pen and paper ready to write these down. once you see this code click again to see if there is more, if not you will see the word END and the an irrelevant (ex PN-3454891-0) with that you can re post those numbers and we can go from there.

2007 Harley Davidson 1200XL Custom Sportster- brake light stays on all the time Trouble shooting hasn't helped. Any Advise?

Brake switch is stuck in closed position.

Or get yourself a schematic, examine the brake light connection to the power line and you will see the possible causes of the anomaly. Or a wire that is always hot when ignition is on has managed to touch your brake hot line thus leaving the light on all the time that the ignition is in the "on" position.

2000 GMC Envoy stalls while driving, shifting issues

Hi,
Yes, the Ignition switch is tied into the 'shift interlock system', and if the system is never really 'off' the codes may be related.

I'd REMOVE the remote start to ensure you're working from a 'clean slate' and get the ignition switch fixed....likely a dealer item, but call around auto parts stores. You may need to get it 'rekeyed' to match.

Also, a Jimmy and Envoy are identical - the Envoy is the higher trim line of the Jimmy: LINK

What is the correct name for cam timer the sportster 883xlh, year 1995

if you're talking about the sensor that triggers your ignition, we call it the "Ignition timing sensor". It is triggered by a cup with small notches in it afixed to the end of the #2 camshaft in the engine.

If you're asking about how do you time one cam to the other, there are four cams in a Sportster. Each cam has a mark or set of marks on the drive gear. You align the cams relative to each other by aligning the marks in the proper sequence. We call the marks, cam timing marks.

I hope I've answered you question. If not, contact me directly at [email protected] Good Luck
