My 2003 Kia Sorrento LX is using a lot of oil. I have to put in a quart of oil every 150 to 200 miles but the engine and ground is dry. Where is it Going? On fixed income and have only had 6 months.

When the oil level goes down - a lot and it isn't leaking out it must be being burned or otherwise disappearing through the exhaust.

That the oil consumption is high isn't unusual though it is unusual that consumption has been allowed to become so heavy without being repaired, perhaps that was a factor in the previous owner's decision to change his car.

Such a heavy oil consumption would usually cause blue or blue/grey exhaust smoke, though the driver is often among the last to notice it due to the slip stream dispersing it quickly. Try parking your car in a shaded place away from people and increasing the rpm to around 2500/3000 and hold it there for a minute or two...

Heavy soiling inside an engine, including a blocked crankcase breather system, can create conditions that cause high oil consumption but modern engines using modern oil rarely develop those conditions and that leaves oil going upwards bypassing the piston rings or the oil going downwards bypassing the valve stem oil seals - or both being the strongest possibilities.

Both of these are expensive to rectify but if piston rings are to blame the cure is an engine overhaul. Considerably less expensive but still eye-wateringly painful is valve stem seal replacement - and so a mechanic after a few tests would usually recommend this as a probable cure but no promises...

The bad news doesn't end there as high oil consumption usually damages the exhaust catalytic converter and oxygen sensors.

It should be possible for you to buy an oil additive to add to your engine oil. If a bottle of oil seal rejuvenator improves matters it would reinforce the possibility the valve seals are a culprit...

Excessive oil consumption on my Pontial Torrent 2006

In the great plan of things simply claiming excessive oil consumption is not enough. You think you know what you mean but how much is excessive?

Car manufacturers insist before taking any warranty action for excessive oil consumption a test must be carried out to decide whether the consumption is excessive and whether repair will be economic. Even though your car isn't under warranty the principle generally will be the same.

An oil consumption test is carried out after a few basic checks and means topping up the oil exactly and then driving 750 miles of mixed town and country driving that doesn't include any sustained high speeds or heavy congested traffic. The oil is then checked and topped up exactly and if the quantity is less than 1 litre it is considered acceptable due to any improvement being uneconomic to achieve.

How many miles is your car covering per litre?

Of course if the engine is producing smoke things are somewhat different...

How much oil should normally be burnt on a Peugeot 207. 2007. 1.6 L auto. 5 door hatch if motor is in very good cond between oil changes (have done approx. 5000kms)

Anon, You really should look in your manual or contact manufacturer to find what is considered normal oil consumption. I have never owned a Peugeot, but have had numerous other makes, mostly domestics to USA and Canada and never had to add oil between changes at approx. 5000 Km.s before oil changes.

Oil Consumption Diagnosis
Checks
Causes
Excessive oil consumption, not due to leaks, is the use of 1 L (1 qt) or more of engine oil within 3 200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
Preliminary
The causes of excessive oil consumption may include the following conditions:
• External oil leaks
Refer to Oil Leak Diagnosis .
• Incorrect oil level or improper reading of the oil level indicator
With the vehicle on a level surface, run the engine for a few minutes, allow adequate drain down time, 2-3 minutes, and measure for the correct engine oil level.
• Improper oil viscosity
Refer to the vehicle owners manual and use the recommended SAE grade and viscosity for the prevailing temperatures.
• Continuous high speed driving and/or severe usage
• Crankcase ventilation system restrictions or malfunctioning components
Refer to Crankcase Ventilation System Inspection/Diagnosis .
• Worn valve guides and/or valve stems
• Worn or improperly installed valve stem oil seals
Refer to Spark Plug Inspection .
• Piston rings broken, worn, or not seated properly
Allow adequate time for the rings to seat.
Replace worn piston rings, as necessary.
Refer to Cylinder Leakage Test .
• Piston and rings improperly installed or not fitted to the cylinder bore
Refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed

What is 200 litres of fuel to 800 klms - how much fuel consumption per kilometre?

200 / 800 = 0.25 L/km or in the more commonly quoted manner, 25L/100 km. That's a heck of a consumption, about like a Mack truck

Oil consumption for gtt

Oil consumption for any vehicle can depend on a number of factors including engine construction, mileage, type of driving so it's a bit difficult to place an exact figure on it.
In the case of the 3SGTE in the Caldina GTT consumption seems to be average/normal, which equates to a drop of about 1/4~1/3 the distance between full and empty on the dipstick every 5,000km (3,000mi). And that's been my average for all 3SGTE's I've had.
If you have a high mileage (>200,000Km/120,000mi) unit, or drive enthusiastically your consumption may increase, but at that age brittle seals are more likely to be responsible for increased oil loss.

Oil consumption, no smoke, no leaks

Oil consumption can be when the piston rings worn out, also valve gaides worn out.
means engine oil passes through the combustion chamber, you cant see smoke sometimes.but when condition of the piston ring is wost you can see smoke behind the exhaust.
