SOURCE: 79 harley ironhead 1000cc xlh no spark from coil

It sounds like your sensor in the timer cavity on the right side of the engine is bad. Disconnect the blue wire from the coil. Take a spark plug out of the engine, put it back in the spark plug wire, and lay it on the head. Turn the switch on and momentarily touch the blue wire to the coil. When you take the wire off of the coil, you should see a spark at the plug. The purpose of the sensor in the timer cavity is to stop the flow of current in the coil and initiate a spark.

Good Luck

1992 ford explorer..replaced head gaskets, coil pack, spark plugs and wires, cam sensor. But there is no spark from the coil pack to spark plugs. It turns but won't start. What else could be wrong?

turn on your ignition and see if you have 12v on the plus side of the coil. if you don't then see if you have 12v at the plus side of any injector. if neither have it, then you have to check your asd relay.

Id like to know if you can test your magneto without a multi circuit tester ? if i am getting spark, is my magneto still good? how do i read the numbers to know what year i in fact have ?

If you are getting a strong, blue, spark on a known, good spark plug, then the magneto is good. If the spark is weak (barely visible), then it is most likely the clearance or rust build up.

The easiest thing to do is check for rust on the surface of the magneto and the surface of the pick-up coil. Emery cloth is good for removing rust on both. Then check for the clearance between the pick-up coil and the magneto. The closer to the magneto, the more powerful the spark (but rotate the magneto to ensure it never touches). When you loosen the screws on the pickup coil to adjust, make sure you have a business card to place between the surfaces to keep them from touching. The strong magnet in the magneto will pull the pickup coil to itself. Tighten the screws and remove the business card. Check for clearance as you rotate the magneto.

The only thing that can go bad in a magneto situation is the pickup coil. So, if you're getting a spark, it most likely is not the pickup coil because it will either produce a spark or won't.

I have a Briggs & Stratton 18.5 HP Twin Cylinder engine that has no spark. How can I check the magneto? And, there is a wire that goes to the magneto. Should there be 12v to that wire? If I replace the...

It all depends on the model of engine. If it is a twin engine doesn't it have two magnetos.Very unusual for both to go bad It will depend on the type of ignition(points or solid state) The wire going to the magneto could be the kill switch (kills when grounded) Disconnect it and see if you get spark. IF so then it is in your safety/ignition circuit. If you replace magneto usually the gap is .008-.012

No spark from the coil packs

Check the wiring and make sure your getting 12V to the module (under the coil packs) when the ignition key is turned on. If you have 12V then ohmmeter the coils. The primary side is like .5-1.5 ohms and the secondaries are in the 7500 ohm neighborhood. If all this checks out OK the module would be the culprit.
