Drive wheels won't freewheel when pulling mower backwards,

I have an MTD White LC210 self-propelled rear wheel drive mower. Almost every time I release the clutch drive and pull the mower backwards, the wheels lock up. Occasionally as I drag the thing backwards, the wheels unlock and roll freely. What gives?

I'm not sure what else to add, except that it's the rear drive wheels that lock up and won't turn when I drag the mower backwards. This happens on and off whether the engine is running or not. Reading others' problems and solutions provided suggests that there's dirt and greasy grime that I should clean. I'll try that unless someone has a better solution.

Thanks Mike. Easy enough to pull the hub caps and I can do that but I'm not sure what you mean by "wheel clutches." What do they look like? What am I supposed to check about them?

I have a troy bilt rear self propell that had the same problem. The cure was the belt guides under the belt cover. I replaced the belt and when I put the cover back on, one of the guides was inside the belt instead of outside the belt and caused a slight increase in the tension on the belt. So be careful when putting the belt cover on.

SOURCE: Honda Harmony mower, self propelled hydrostatic,

If i remember correctly, under each drive wheel, there is a small gear, and under each gear there is a small metal rod that is what the transmission uses to propel the mower...it sounds like the rods either have dirt on them or they are just stuck and can not move to allow you to pull it backwards

SOURCE: Wheels do not freely roll backwards

SOUNDS LIKE THE PINONS ARE ON BACKWARDS. THE KEY SHOULD SLIDE OFF THE PINIONS WHEN PULLED BACK AND LOCK WHEN ENGAGED. YOU HAVE THE OPPOSITE PROBLEM OR ITS BACKWARDS!

SOURCE: front wheels lock up when pull mower backwards

Typically self-propelled mowers are propelled using the front wheels, which only turn forward. Pulling the mower back while the front wheels are turning will damage the drive gears. It's best to raise the front wheels slightly off the ground before pulling back.

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

How to remove rear drive wheels on old MTD 21

Daren Ingold's suggestion works only for the right rear wheel on my 19+ year old MTD Yardman 21" self propelled mower. The ratchet spur on rear left wheel is held on by a bolt in the center of the axle and a spline. Remove the center bolt and washer. Pry the ratchet spur off the spline by using three medium blade screwdrivers wedged between the wheel and the spur gently tapping the three screwdrivers in succession until the spur is half off the spline. It will come off easily after that. Remove the spur, noting direction, and remove the wheel and replace it with one of the front wheels (they're all the same design) if it is in better condition and use the rear wheel for the front. Good luck ever finding a new replacement for this particular wheel. My mower is 19+ years old but runs perfectly otherwise. Stored in dry basement.

Craftsman mower #247.887760 rear drive. rear wheels lock-up when you try to pull mower backwards

The rear wheels are locked to the drive train. To pull or push the mower, you must pull out the release probably at the back of the mower, near the transmission.

I bought a self propelled Toro mower and it is hard to pull backwards. I removed the plastic toe guard and that did not help. I also have a White "brand" self propelled and it is easy to pull backwards.

The self propel system uses a type of racheting pinion drive that sometimes gets greased up and wont release like it should.

You would need to remove the wheels and pinions and look at the shaft ends for a key, a ball and a spring. This is the "pawl" that locks the wheels going forward and rachets when the wheels go backwards.

Clean up the parts of all the aluminum colored grease and reoil with something lighter. 3 in 1 would do nicely. Reassemble.

Now the next time you start going backwards and it jams...just push the mower forwards slightly without engaging the drive and see if the unit doesnt free itself.

Good luck and be careful!
