Centerstand the motorcycle, locate the starter under the left cylinders, pull back the rubber cover on the solenoid cable and unbolt the battery cable, take out the two bolts holding the back end of the starter to the block, and pull the starter straight out of the motor. You may have to gently pry the starter out with the help of a screw driver.

while trying to start an engine, and only the solenoid clicks, there are these 3 things- no juice from the battery, starter corroded contacts(the big cables) or starter is shot. so first make sure the battery is charged, next make sure the cable mounts from battery to starter are clean(no rust), if that is all good and doesnt start , remove starter and have it tested.

SOURCE: We removed starter from a 1983 Honda Goldwing

the starter is the tensioner, there is an internal besides that as well. This is one of the most difficult out there that is for sure. You may have to rotate the engine or starter gear subtly to get everything to line up. Let me know if you have any other concerns.

SOURCE: honda goldwing 1100 1981 i bought an air pump

A better answer than 'just replace the fuse', is to install a new lighter socket near the battery with a new fuse holder and a heavy enough fuse and wiring to sustain the current draw of the air pump. Connect the wiring (with fuse) directly to the battery connections. Hope this helps.

I drove to work on my 83 goldwing. At lunch drove without incident. At knockoff, the starter would turn but not engage. Any ideas?

Assuming the starter chain has not broken your one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear. Unfortunately, if I am correct, you will have to remove the motor to replace parts #2 and 15.

This covers 1975 to '77. The wireing for major components like the starter, generator, etc., should be the same.
