Some Harley regulators must have a good frame ground.

Depends on the state of the battery , The regulator looks at the battery charged state and regulates the voltage to fully charge it , If the voltage does not drop back after a few hours the battery could be on the way out.

SOURCE: I think I have a bad stator on my 2002Harley Dyna

too many variables !
Firstly check battery under load ! any battery place or auto electrician can so it usually free!
do this before replacing any thing else!
make sure all connections are clean & tight
if battery is ok get them to check the charge rate on bike! its a simple test or you can do it with a volt meter they are only cheap to buy!

How do you test voltage regulator 83 honda magna?

You have posted to a HARLEY tech site so not a great likelihood you will get that answer here. SORRY ALTHOUGH I guess you could run the bike at about 2000 rpm and see if you have about 14.6 to 15.5 VDC across the battery which would indicate a good alternator and regulator.

SPEEDOMETER DIGITAL MILAGE READ OUT GOING ON AND OFF. BLINKERS WON'T CANCEL ON THERE OWN

The voltage regulator has failed if the voltage EVER rises above about 15.5 VDC. Surface voltage should not be as high as 13 VDC unless maybe the bike has JUST been shut off and then it should bleed down into the high 12's after about an hour of sitting.

The signal self cancellation is tied to the speedometer and the TSM/TSSM and so if one fails it will affect the other as far as signal self cancellation is concerned.

Testing voltage regulator

ENGINE OFF,UNPLUG the regulator, test continuity from each conductor to ground on the stator, if you have continuity STATOR IS SHORTED... if you test voltage OUTPUT at the stator, it should be around ten volts AC! NOT DC! per thousand RPM... THEN use a 12 volt test lite from regulator leads to ground, if ANY light happens at either lead, BAD regulator

2006 harley dyna charging at low speed, not at high rpms

This used to be a common problem back in the days of generators but I've not heard of this since Harley went to the alternator systems in 1970. It is unusual to say the least.

The first thing I'd do is have my battery tested. This is simply good procedure anytime you are experiencing a charging system problem.

Next, check the output of your alternator. To do this, you'll need a DVOM, digital volt ohm meter. Unplug the voltage regular at the front of your engine case close to the oil filter. Now, put your DVOM into "Voltage", "AC", Range 50 volts or better. Now, with the engine running, put one lead from the meter to one of the pins in the plug in the engine case. Put the other lead in the other pin. Rev the engine up to about 2000-2500 RPM. You should read at least 30 Volts AC. You must have the meter in the AC positon because an alternator puts out alternating current. Your regulator converts it to Direct Current voltage for the charging the battery and reduces the voltage. If you are reading thirty volts or better, I would suspect the Voltage Regulator is your problem.
