Car Fuel Smell

I ran my car over a road divider (about 10cm-13cm high) and scraped the underside (under-body) of the car. Ever since, I have smelt strong smell of fuel when it is running (I believe only from the exhaust pipe) and the smell lingers on after the car is parked and not running. A friend said it is a rich smell of fuel. Any ideas on diagnosis, cost, repair needed? Thanks! Darin

Hello,

Sorry to hear about the mishap. It seems to me the divider most likely scraped through one of your fuel lines that runs from the gas tank to the engine. Look underneath the car for any puddles of gas, then look directly above the puddle and see if you can find any fuel lines that might have a hole in them. If the hole in the fule line is small enough, you may not have a puddle, but with the car running, you should see it spraying out somewhere from the pressure of the fuel pump. A rich smell of raw gasoline is not a normal smell from your exhaust, so I would rule that out. Oh....and I hope you are not a smoker. If so, I would recommend you not smoke in there until you get it fixed.

I hope this helps.

Mike

You rubbed through the fuel tank or cracked it and it has a small leak. They make a fuel tank repair kit you can by a a auto parts store some times they work and sometimes they don't. If gas is spraying or leaking on the exhaust you could have a fire. I have drained a tank and put a screw with a fiber washer in the hole and then covered it with a 1/2 inch if silicone rubber it lasted for 5 years. Your fuel lines and filter are usually up on the side of the frame and should be ok

Why does my 93 Honda Accord run fine and then dies going down the road and will start again and die again?

There is a black fuel relay way up under the top left driver side dash that breaks its main wire solder connections on the circuit board under over-heat conditions. Resolder that relay. Starting fluid will show that you have lost fuel delivery under no start conditions. You can use the breather hose from the valve cover for this test.

Foel problem

When you smelt fuel, It was flooded. Your best bet would be to replace the spark plugs. Gas will foul them out, just like oil.

When you remove your gas cap do you have alot of pressure releasing out of you gas cap? Also do you smell it more while your running the a/c or do you smell it as if it where in the car? You might want to see if the fuel pump gasket was replaced when you had the new gas tank installed or possibly check under the hood for injectors or the pressure regulator. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

2000 Saturn S-Series undercarriage scraped

About the only thing you could damage as a result of going over a curb resulting in coolant loss would be damage to the bottom of the radiator...This radiator has plastic side tanks which are susceptible to damage...The real damage may be related to any under car crossmembers which may have to be straightend or replaced...Also check for any damage to AC condenser which is located in front of radiator...One simple way to check that is to see if AC is working now provided that it workrd before incident with curb

Where is fuel filter on 1997 Volvo 850 T-5

The fuel filter is located on the passenger side near the rear wheel well, just in front of the rear axle, around 60cm in front of the fuel tank. Look for the fuel lines running underneath the car. The filter is around 12-13cm in length and around 7cm in diameter, probably covered in road grime,
