I have a 25 hp Mariner o/b with harness installed. I wish to connect to a Narva 64012 Marine 4 position key ignition switch. The color codes and where they attach to motor are: Red to + terminal at starter solenoid (+ battery feed) White to CD IGN box Brown to forward/reverse switch and lower + terminal on starter solenoid Blue to choke solenoid Black to earth Pink to earth (normal color code is yellow) Green to magneto ( pull start flywheel) The Narva 64012 switch has 4 positions: BATT IGN SOL ACC I tried connecting Red to BATT, White to IGN through a kill switch, Brown to SOL, Blue to ACC through a choke switch, Pink and Black to negative battery post and Green was left unconnected. When turned on at key motor started but would not cut out when key turned to off or when the kill switch was activated. Can you help with correct wiring sequence?

I will need to look at some diagrams and that switch. I am not familiar with that switch off hand and I need to look into the wiring diagram for that as well before I can give you a complete answer. I am not at home where I can dig into this at the moment but will be shortly. It almost sounds like one of the grounds is not correct but I need to be sure.
Thanks

Hi Colin, I have looked several diagrams over and do not see the configuration your describing. can I ask what year is this motor? and is the harness factory?
    Thanks

I have a pdf of a 25E but am unable to upload it. It can be found at:http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/...
This shows the yellow which is my pink. All other colors and destinations are correct.
It shows the wiring for a 6 position key ignition but I have a 4 position one.
I hope this helps you further.

On the pdf it shows a remote control box which is non existant on my motor. The Blue (choke) will run through a separate switch. This switch is spring returned to off position. It would seem that I connect one end to power and the other to choke.

My motor is a 25EL. Origin of harness unknown. The pdf does not show the CD IGN box. The Green wires (2) from the magneto terminate at a small box (1 1/2 in ) on the starboard side near the spark plugs with the green wire from the harness. (2 in 1 out) No other wires to or from this box. This box is not in the pdf.

What has to be happening is that the coil pack is still energized even though the key swutch is off, all the key is doing is activating the starter allowing the motor to turn over and then fire. I am trying to make since of this diagram but the connectors are throwing me off without being there to test voltages to see where the power is coming from. With the key off, use a meter to check for voltage to the coil and trace back where it is coming from and we will find out what is energizing the coil.

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2011

Look at the wiring to the magneto and see if your backfeeding into the coil.

The engine runs when started by key ...basically what I am asking for is a kill switch wiring - to be able to kill motor when toggle is relased from kill switch and killed when key turned off.
Will wiring the White wire from CD Ignition to the kill switch and ignition terminal on in terminal of kill switch and earth wire to out terminal of kill switch do what I want?

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2011

I believe what the issue is after looking at diagrams and reading your posts is that the white wire should come off the key switch and to the kill switch, then connect the kill to the green wire to the magneto or the starter slenenoid then to magneto.http://outboardparts.com/mercury/trouble...

Ignition switch diagrams

Remove the seat. THEN disconnect the battery cables, negative cable first. THEN remove the ignition switch face nut. THEN remove the fuel tank. THEN remove the mounting screw and then remove the switch cover and then remove the switch from the switch cover. THEN remove the harness covering and cut the switch wires 3 in.

(76.2 mm) from the switch and remove the switch.

To install a new switch first slide the replacement conduit onto the harness wires. THEN observing the colour codes, either install butt connectors to the harness wires and complete butt splices to the new ignition switch and seal the butt splice connectors OR solder the wires instead of using butt splice connectors and use heat shrink tubing to insulate them (my choice) THEN position the conduit over the butt splice connectors or soldered, heat shrink covered wires. THEN insert the ignition switch into the hole of the switch cover with the word "TOP" which is stamped on the switch body facing up toward the lettering on the switch position decal and loosely install the face nut and THEN install and tighten the mounting screw to 36-84 in-lbs (4-9 Nm). AND THEN tighten the face nut to secure the switch within the cover AND THEN secure main the main harness to the frame backbone with zip ties. THEN reinstall the fuel tank AND THEN install the battery positive cable AND THEN install the negative cable. Always install the negative cable last as a precaution against an inadvertent and dangerous short circuiting which could result with the positive cable if it is installed/connected AFTER the negative cable. Properly and securely install the seat next.

USING PERKO SWITCH HOW DO I POSITION SWITCH USING 120 VOLT AC CHARGER USING 2 MARINE BATTERIES AND WHAT TERMINALS ON BATTERIES DO I HOOK UP ALLIGATOR CHARGING CLIPS? THANK YOU DON

Hi Don!

If you wish to charge one battery at a time, the switch should be set to "off". Charger clips will connected to the batt you wish to charge hot-to-hot and cold-to-cold. If you want to charge both batts at once (not really recommended) switch set to "all".

Hope this helps.

REMOVAL

  1. On models equipped with airbag, disarm airbag as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
  2. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. Remove ignition switch as described under STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEMS/COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/IGNITION SWITCH.
  4. Remove key light case from lock body, if equipped.
  5. On 1989 Accord models, place ignition lock cylinder in the ACC position.
  6. On except 1989 Accord, place ignition lock in the I position.
  7. On all models, position suitable punch into hole on lock cylinder housing and depress pin, then remove lock cylinder from housing.
INSTALLATION

  1. On 1989 Accord models, install ignition lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Place ignition lock cylinder in the LOCK position.
    2. Rotate key until it is almost at the ACC position, then insert lock cylinder until pin contacts housing.
    3. Rotate key to ACC position, then push pin in and insert lock cylinder into housing until pin clicks into place.
  1. On except 1989 Accord, install ignition lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Place ignition lock cylinder in the O position.
    2. Rotate key until it is almost at the I position, then insert lock cylinder until pin contacts housing.
    3. Rotate key to I position, then push pin in and insert lock cylinder into housing until pin clicks into place.
  1. Install ignition switch and connect battery ground cable.
SRS wire harness is routed near the ignition switch.

CAUTION:
  • All SRS electrical wiring harnesses are covered with yellow outer insulation.
  • Before disconnecting the SRS wire harness, install the short connector on the airbag.
  • Replace the entire affected SRS harness assembly if it has an open circuit or damaged wiring.
IGNITION SWITCH
  1. Remove the steering wheel, then remove the steering column covers.
  2. Disconnect the 7-P connector from the under-dash fuse box.
  3. Insert the key and turn it to "0."
  4. Remove the 2 screws and replace the base of the switch.
