Drop fuel tank. if guage moves all around its probably the fuel level sensor on fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank. If the guage stay's in one spot its the guage , replace instrument cluster assembly. you can take just the glass off the cluster and move the fuel guage needle and it will work (if stuck) but for how long? The wires to the guage come from the sending unit to the power train control module to the instrument cluster. pray its not in the wiring.

2040 john deere fuel guage doesnt work

The problem you explain usually has something to do with the sending unit float. Floats can absorb gas to the point where they just sink to the bottom of the tank. This can happen with both brass and plastic floats. The second thing is the sending unit you installed in your tank. Check to see if when you placed the unit in the tank , the float arm may have hung up on a baffle or some other obstruction in the tank. This would keep the sending unit from showing correctly. Good Luck Friend.

98 gmc jimmy fuel guage not working

No issues with the fuel guage that I know of , but you can follow the basic troubleshooting guidelines. Starting with the wiring disconnect at the fuel tank for a bad connector or bad connection. Only other connection would be up to the instrument cluster in the vehicle. Only replaceable items would be the guage or the sending unit in the fuel tank. You can disconnect the return line circuit or connector at the at the gas tank and jump a wire to the ground the that feeds the gauge and see if the guage moves, but don't and i repeat don't hold to long because the guage will go over hard over and could damage the guage. If the guage moved and I would suspect a bad float on the sending unit or a bad sending unit, either case the fuel pump assy would have to come out for repairs.

Fuel guage doesn't work

Most common cause of this is a defective fuel level sending unit inside the gas tank. Remove the gas tank and replace the sending unit.

Gas guage is not working

If there is gas in the tank and it is not registering correctly, then the sending unit or power to sending unit is bad.

Fuel gauge doesn't register correctly

The fuel gauge sending unit is in the fuel tank in a module along with the fuel pump, and float guage. It sends an electronic signal to the fuel guage on your dash. When it becomes worn or the float may even have a leak in it, the unit sends incorrect info to your guage. The solution is to empty your fuel tank, drop it from the vehicle, remove and replace the entire module.

Gas Gauge not reading correctly

The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.
