Question about 2008 Piaggio Zip 50

1 Answer

2008 Piaggio Zip 50 dies when throttle applied

I have a 2008 zip 50 4t. It runs well in idle. But when I increase the throttle the engine nearly dies on me. It can also happen that when I test drive it runs well for a sec or two but before it reaches max rpm it cuts out. I changed the coil, CDI and spark plug. Also took the cab apart and cleaned all but no change. Perfect in idle but as soon as you want to crank it open it cuts out.@

SOURCE: I have a 2008 zip 50 4t. It runs well in idle. But

Juergen, FixYa sent me a notice that you want my opinion. The answer Mr. Ginting gave is correct. However, the main jet is brass and deterioration should not be a noticeable concern.

Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter motor or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. Faulty ignition relay.
14. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
15. Check for engine trouble codes.

It is a 2 stroke and this means that oil is mixed with the petrol to be burnt in the combustion chamber. If the engine runs without popping and *******, you shouldn't worry about it.

Hi, Mr Juergen,

From your explanation, it is clear the problem is on your jetting system i.e. the main jet on your carbureter.
When in idle the main jet is not in use but pilot jet. While you increase the RPM the main jet has the main role to accelerate the RPM/speed.
You can try re-clean again the main jet nozzle on your bike and let's see what happening.

Please note : over time your main jet can be deteroirated and if this is happen you may need to get new carbureter kit. It contains jettings, seals, o-ring etc.

Best luck.

I have a three year old Piaggio 50cc Zip scooter. It starts first time and will run perfectly well up to half throttle. after this it loses power especially uphill, as though it is running out of fuel....

I have had the same problem with my stepsons zip 50 and have done all the usual checks. The solution is from a piaggio technition. Take off the air cleaner and housing, start the scooter and bring it to the point where the engine dies. At this point spray easy start or a gasoline spray direct down the carb intake. If the revs pick up, you have a lack of crank case compression and the most likely reason is worn oil seals on the crankshaft. It sounds odd but the worn seals cause all kinds of strange problems.
Thats 2 stokes for you. Hope it helps, good luck
