SOURCE: bike will not idle

Remove and clean the carb. Reassemble then adjust the pilot screw. This screw is on the bottom outside of the carb centered L & R and forward of the main jet. The screw is nearly recessed in the carb. Turn the screw out 1/2 turn to richen the mixture if the cleaning alone doesn't do the trick. Also, move the clip on the jet needle down one notch for better low speed response. Reset the idle speed as needed.

SOURCE: Yr 2000 thundercat, won't idle unless choke fully on

First thing I would try is some sea foam, you can get it pretty much at any auto parts store...put it in the tank per instructions on the bottle, if the carbs are gummed/dirty... seafoam is you best hope at getting them clean without pulling them.

If sea foam doesnt work, you'll have to yank the carbs, but before you do... pull the tank, set it backwards where the seat was, get about a two foot fuel line (air line works just fine) run it ti the tank and start the bike, take a can of starting fluid (WD 40 works too but stinks when it starts to burn off afterwards) and spray around the base of the outside of the carbs where the boots connect it to the intake, if the engibe revs, you have a leak...cracked boot probably.

If no leaks are detected... then yank the carbs, pull the bowl covers and start cleaning....also, while you have them off pull the slide covers off and check the diaphrams on the needle for rips or cracks as well.

Check/clean.. put everything back together... if it still isnt running right then I have no other suggestions... certainly sounds like an air/fuel problem... if were anything else choking it wouldn't make it better.

SOURCE: bike will not turn over lights work fine kick

Check the kick stand switch first. They are always in a location that is ideal for collecting dirt etc. Put the stand down and press the switch a few times by hand and then try starting again. Maybe even a bit of WD40 on it if it's anything like mine after being riden through the winter.
If this doesn't work, the kill switch is then worth investigating.

SOURCE: 1982 Suzuki GS850 GL will only run with the starter button held

Obviously the CDI is picking up power from the starter button. Check the ignition key switch for proper operation. Chances are that whatever fried the loom also fried part of the switch. Alternate to that, trace the wire powering the CDI system, disconnect it at the source (starter button connection), then find a power source that is live only when the key is turned on and then hook the CDI wire up there.

Finally started my 79 suzuki TS 250 and it wouldn`t stop. There`s no kill switch. I had to turn off the fuel and let it run out. Kind of worried about starting again. Tried starting it again, but having...

To stop a dieseling two stroke motor you can either choke them out (full choke) or block the air intake with a rag and starve the motor for air. Chances are the carburetor slide is sticking in a wide open position. Take the carburetor apart clean and inspect it. Also inspect the intake manifold for cracks and air leaks. For normal running add a kill switch so you can stop the motor without having to unplug or ground the spark plug. If the motorcycle is completely stripped except for a power wire to the coil, add the kill switch between the generator (wire coming out of the motor) and the coil.

1986 VF500F Honda Interceptor Just bought the bike today. The guy we bought it off of said it needed new spark plug wires. He gave us the wires and also the coils. My husband replaced the spark plugs,...

Any idea how long the bike sat without running? So assuming spark plugs weren't wet, it's likely not getting fuel. If it hasn't run for a year or so, you'll have to empty the fuel tank and drain the carbs. Try fresh gas and new spark plugs. Make sure the fuel tap is on and fuel is flowing into the carbs. Also be sure your choke is closing when you move the lever. Check to be certain kill switch is in the run position. Charge battery so you have good cranking power.

2005 kodiak can't get it spark already changed coil. sometimes it will spark a little.then stop

it sounds as though you have a loose wire, start the bike as normal but as you do gently wiggle the wires near the kill switch and ignition ,if the bike starts and stops you know you are close to the problem also check the earth contacts on the coil to frame are good and replace the plug as this is cheap and not so uncommon.

Bike wont kick over

do u have any spark at the spark plug. When the kill switch is faulty it won't give any spark try disconnecting. sometimes this kill switch grounds itself or the contacts stay closed. For it to have sparks contacts should be opened. This kill switch grounds the coil so the engine stops running

Not getting fire from coil

Do you have a manual? If you do can you send me a copy of the correct schematic for your bike. It will me help you if you can scan a copy in to send me. If you don't already have a basic voltmeter that measures resistance. You should pick one up at either WalMart or even better Harbor Freight has the best deal $4-$9 there. What year is your bike? You can start off by isolating the kill switches from the coil by unplugging the coil lead headed towards on/off switch and other safety switches. The idea here is to make sure you don't have a bad switch by disconnecting all kill switches to test for spark. If still no spark does the bike have cdi box or points fire ignition. CDI is capacitor discharge ignition often refered to as the black box. Points are mechanical switches that open and close riding on the crankshaft.
Please send year of bike so I can better assist you.
Thank you,
Todd

On and off switch Honda ES3500

Locate the wire to the kill switch and inspect for disconnected or damaged.

If not...

locate its connection (plug) disconnect it, start the engine, insert a small screw driver into the plug that leads into the engine assy. and ground it to the engine to check that it stops the engine. If so the switch is not grounded or faulty.

If not...

That circuit is damaged inside the housing.

Those switches operate by grounding the signal to the coil to stop the spark.

On position = open/not grounded

Off position = closed/grounded

I hope this helps...Good luck
