Tip & How-To about 2002 Yamaha XVS 650 Dragstar

Save a fortune if your crank shaft journals are damaged

If your crankshaft journals are damaged and they want you to buy a new one at a cost of $850. and bearings at $185, Say no. you can fix it. An engineering company can grind the crankshaft down for you at a cost of $42 they can source new replacement bearings from a motor car bearing specification manual which The car bearings will cost only $8. thats a saving of $985. I did this for my XVS 650 Dragstar and it's still running.

oil light comes on at low rpm but oil level is right up

Do not ride the bike any further, otherwise you could have a big bill.

1. Check the electrics on the oil pressure switch and light 2. Buy a new oil pressure sensor, an easy fix 3. Oil pressure release valve malfunctioning (could have the wrong spring in it or worn piston clearance in valve body), an easy fix . 4. Leaking oil seal (or backwards installed) on the crankshaft (under the timing cover), an easy fix. 5.Worn out oil pump (when oil gets hot it loses it's viscosity,or it's thickness and thus an oil pump with worn clearances will not pump it effectively) also easy to fix. 6. Worn main bearings/worn crank journals (oil escaping from clearance between crankshaft journals and shell bearings on crankshaft big end resulting in loss of pressure). This could be the case on a bike that has high mileage Requires a rebuild. 7.Also, the drillings in the timing cover and oil pump through crankcase to oil pipe junction block must be clean.

rod bearings replacement

It can be done as long as the journals on the crankshaft are smooth. I would use Plasti-gauge to check the clearance between the new bearing and crankshaft. If you have a bad rod bearing already, or the crankshaft journal is really scored, it's a waste of time.

put in new rod and main bearings oil drops to zero after warmup 1997 2.2 honda accord put in manual gage to check for sure also put in new headgasket and rings good oil pressure to start then gone what am I missing

Well the cam bearings will have to do with this also,if it has them,if not it can be the wear in the cam carriers. But most likely the crankshaft journals are worn to much, the crank would need turning, and over size rod,and main bearings would need to be installed.

repair crankshaft

There is no "alternative" method of repairing any crankshaft. (you didn't mention an alternative to what?)It can sometimes be cut undersized and "fat" bearings installed but most times the journals are not thick enough to do this. The journals can be welded over and re-machined but this is very expensive. The only real option is obtaining a good used one or a new one.
