Have you checked out your starter solenoid? If you momentarily short across it, does the engine turn over. Point is I am trying to make, is that are you certain that the original start button was definitely at fault.
with the ignition off ,use a multimeter set on continuity ( ohms)
place one lead on a wire at the ignition switch and the other end on a wire at the cdi when you have a circuit mark that wire and so on till you have identified all the wires
then turn on the ignition switch ans set the multimeter to volts dc and check which of those wires now has a voltage reading
Hi Derek:
Excellent "classic" ride you've got there.
Considering the age of the bike I'd be looking at the maintenance history and the mileage.
Suspicion????????????? Clutch
Check linkage adjustment. Make sure there is a bit of "slack" before the lever starts to exert pressure. If you're luck that will cure it (for a while).
For sure, it's worth tracking the problem down and repairing it rather than delaying and causing "consequential" damage.
Don't know where you are but it's riding season in this corner of Canada so best to get it fixed.
Cheerfuls.
Joshua, starters drive may be sticking, remove starter and have checked out.

Is there a good battery installed? A battery functions as a voltage regulator. Without a battery, there is no voltage regulation and you can blow the light bulbs easily.
