I have a 2008 Yamaha V-Star 1300 and I am in the
Easy, just get a cheap multimeter at Radio Shack, $10 to $15, and confirm continuity to ground of the female connector that the black/gold wire plugs into. If no continuity then just hook the new black wire to any solid black wire or to any ground point available, as in a nut or bolt mounting something to the frame or forks... If you have never used a multimeter before, The guy at radio Shack can show you how to use one in about 30 seconds or less.

sound like the connector assembly that the two wires hook up at the back of the lite socket may be shorting out on something.. visually look at all the wires going out of the socket and make sure they are not rubbing on or chaffing on any metal surfaces. once you find it, you might get lucky and repair it with some electrical tape...but if any strands are broken you may want to consider cutting and stripping off new ends and install a splice.
My bike has been sitting
Yes , you are correct.May be the carb holes are getting clogged and that is not letting the fuel to enter and that is causing the problem. The small jet holes from where the fuel runs to carb, are actually very small and gets easily clogged and this many a times causes the problem.--------
Getting the carb apart and cleaning the carb and cleaning the small jets and main jets properly should clear the problem.-------- Also many a times the inside of carb gets rusted and cause this problems.-----
Running the engine with seafoam in carb should help.--------
Thanks.Helpmech.
Fuel is flooding the carburators.
Your issue is probably bad fuel petcock diaphragms. The fuel is by passing the float needles and running through the vacuum lines into the intake manifolds.

More than likely, you have water (condensation) in the fuel that's left in the float bowls. This is not the only possibility but I find it to be most likely.
The best method for removing would be to drain them, but this could be a bit of a challenge. If you can drain them I would strongly suggest that. One thing you could try is to add a bottle of dry gas (water remover, or isopropanol alcohol) to about half a tank of fresh fuel and agitate it the best you can - by rocking the bike back and forth with the front brake applied. Then, lean the bike over (get some help!) and let fuel flow from the overflows on the carbs if possible - maybe more than once. You'll have to turn the key on to let the fuel pump pump fresh fuel to re-fill the bowls inbetween float bowl drainings. This may flush enough of the old fuel from the bowls to allow the water remover to emulsify the fuel/water left in the float bowls. You might want to try this first before you have it serviced, but keep in mind this may not be perfectly effective. It is a cheap thing to try though and it's likely what I would try if I did not want to pull the carbs off which I would not want to do if I did not have to.
I would also suggest that you check the fuel filter - it's under the seat under a plastic cover. After you get it running, change it. You might want to drain it during your attempts to get it running - it could harbor water.
You might want to throw in a fresh set of spark plugs, too.
Best of luck to ya!
2001 VStar 1100. Overnight battery
sounds like the voltage regulator/rectifier is back feeding to ground discharging the battery, disconnect the wire going to battery from regulator, and then let it sit for some time, then check again, hope that works for you.
