2004 Yamaha V Star Classic - Page 5 Questions & Answers
I tried starting my 2004
This sounds very much like the gear on the starter may have broken. Less likely is that there is a tooth missing on the ring gear its self.Try putting the bike in gear and ushing it forward a couple of inches so it turns the engine (and the ring gear) slightly. Try the start button again. If it now works then you have a tooth missing from the ring gear, if it doesn't then the gear on the motor has a problem. Easy to remove and check, The starter is located (If you didn'y know already) right at the front of the engine.
2004 V star, starts right
Start by replacing the the spark plug caps/covers that snap onto the the spark plugs. On most machines the spark plug caps simple unscrew off of the end of the spark plug wire. If the 5000 OHM resister burns out in one of the caps it will cause a weak spark in the effected cylinder at idle. You can purchase NGK brand spark plug caps (the same as OEM caps) for $5 to $7 each. You can test your caps with a voltage meter. Off the wire they should read 5000 OHM's no higher or lower. As for the possibility of dirt in the carburetor, unplug the fuel line from the carburetor and try a squirt of carburetor cleaning solution directly in the bowl of the carburetor. If you just have a small amount of jellied fuel causing the issue, this may take care of the problem.

Check the clutch cable free play and adjust (at the bar end) as necessary. Make minor adjustments and take it for a short ride to test.
Where is the oil filter
Believe it or not, this is a LONG job on a dragstar. The filter is on the right hand side, behind the exhausts, behind the round YAMAHA plate held on by 3 bolts. First you have to remove your exhausts!
When you take off that exterior casing with the 3 bolts you're confronted with another 3 bolts inside, remove those and also 2 more further along the casing (towards the front tyre) the whole thing should come off now, remember to cover the pipes if necessary and put oil pan down as quite a bit will come out.
When you change the oil filter and put the new 'O' ring in, you have to grease it up well or it won't seal and you will get an oil leak and have to re-do the whole thing again. Also.... Just be careful here! You need to keep track of the bolts and make sure that they go back in the same holes. Some are 70mm, some 75mm if you get it wrong and tighten a 75mm bolt into a 70mm hole, you could crack the crank case, which will set you back about £800. It's a common DIY Dragstar error and will effectively put an older Dragstar beyond economical repair!
To avoid such a schoolboy error, draw the shape of the case you're removing onto a piece of card and as you remove the bolts poke them through the card in their respective places.

From what I recall, they are accessed by removing the seat.
Take off the Pillion seat to reveal the nut for the driver's seat. Remove this and then you should have exposed the coils (amongst other things).

Hello Jim, Yams shafts rarely fail, & the few i have seen that did were from abuse and lack of maint. --they have been around for decades with virtualy the same design. If you narrowed the problem down to the gear box to the front of the shaft, that eliminates a final drive problem. There are splines and u-joints that couple the shaft. There is a jam nut holding the u-joint to the middle shaft---if i was to bet, i would say that was the problem. It could of sheered, or backed off at that point.... without knowing the extent of the damage you can't tell what it's going to entail to make repairs..if it happened while you were crusing and made some loud "clunking noises", it could of done more damage. Beware of dealer repairs and cost estimates---$2500-3000 is a figure they like to quote the minute they hear, "shaft problem" -- a complete used drive can found and installed for around $700-800, if it comes to that. Here is a link for a decent service & repair manual.

Backfires badly when downshifting or just letting
Most people have this problem after changing the exhaust system. In your case you have to unbolt the exhaust system just to change the oil filter during an oil change. There is an oil filter relocation kit available for around $400 that allows you to both use a spin on filter and not have to unbolt the exhaust system every time you change the oil. The cause of your problem is air leaking past the exhaust o-rings in the head. Buy new exhaust o-ring gaskets for the head and your problem should be solved. If there is a sealing pipe gasket going from the head pipe to the muffler you may have to replace that too. The cause of your problem was probably an oil change where the mechanic replaced the oil filter but did not bother to replace the exhaust o-ring gaskets. Happy riding.

I have a 05' Yamaha
Has the bike been parked for two weeks or more? If so, the fuel has most likely gummed up and plugged fuel passages and jets. Might try adding 1/2 to full can of SeaFoam to existing fuel in the tank, crank the bike and run (with choke if you have to) at a high idle for several minutes. Shut it down and let set for an hour or so allowing the SeaFoam to work. Start bike again and run at high idle again, trying to run it without the choke. If this doesn't work, then the carb probablyneeds a tear down and a manuel cleaning and reset.
Backfiring when idling back down thru the gears
that seems to be what they do, i too have a 650a and have jardines on with baffles, it still pops and cackles when you roll off the gas. are you running no baffels? when i took mine out i noticed a drop in power as i had removed the requierd back pressure for optimum performance. you can get small baffles to slip into straight pipes from jc whitney for about $5 each.
anyway back to the backfire. my local bike shop shrugged their sholders when i asked them about mine saying it's what they do. you will get used to it and you will find a way to kinda not make it do it so much. i actually have grown to like it now, except when there are cops about.
happy safe riding
Have a 04 Yamaha V
It is not essential but the static timing may need to be advanced slightly to compensate for the different back pressure.
The headlight fuse blows as
Are the wires running through the handle bars? Try getting a new fuse in there, have a bunch on hand, and get some help, like 3 or 4 people, go out at night and hit the switch, look for the spark, It will show up ten times better at night. If it is in the handle bars, you might be able to see it there too. Try it. Turn the bars left and right, look up and down, Hope this helps.
Remove smog and plug head
There is a kit available thru ebay or your local motorcycle parts store/dealer (via Tucker Rocky or Parts Unltd). It's an aftermarket kit. it has all the instructions with it to remove the AIS and plug the head.
BUT BEWARE!! You can break the pipe/plug port if you do the procedure incorrectly! If you have to use any more force than light tapping on the plug driver, STOP, remove the plug and correct the problem (which is normally metal build-up on the plug for insert the plug crooked). If you try to force the plug in, you will surely cause damage to the port.
Good Luck.
