I want to know- if there is a big difference between a 2001 v-star classic and , say a 2005 or 06 v star classic. Are the newer ones lighter, or advanced in some way, enough to make a difference?

motorcycle "back-fires" and often runs on one cylinder

I own a 2002 Yamaha V-STAR 1100 Custom. I have had the bike for about one year. I have had to frequently replace the rear spark plug (monthly) since it seems to "foul" out due to "back-firing" The previous owner says he had no such problem.

I replaced the IGNITION COIL to the rear cylinder because I thought it was intermitantly functioning. The problem was not corrected.

I checked the settings on the DYNA 3000 ignition system and they all were set to the mid range setting as prescribed by the operational chart that came with the bike.

I emptied the fuel tank, dried it out and checked for foreign objects and found none. I replaced the in line fuel filter. The backfiring continued.

I removed the air box cleaned it and checked all the air fittings. The problem continued.

I contacted the dealer and was told that a thouough cleaning of the dual carburator should solve the problem. I removed the carb covers, the rubber diaframs, the needle valves, I soaked them in carb cleaner. I cleaned the exposed ports, covers, inlets, and other parts dried them and reassembled the system. Once again the backfiring continued.

I have gone as far as I can with the limited knowledge that I have. Can anyone guide me from here?

Thank you for any aide that you can render.

Does the bike backfire only when the throttle is being closed? The carbs have a idle enrichment circuit. If the idle enrichment diaphragms are stuck in the closed position, the bike will backfire when the throttle is shut down. You can't remove these parts for cleaning without seperating the two carb bodies (and then needing to synchronize the carbs after reassembly). A trick that worked for me...fresh fuel, and some fuel system cleaner in the tank...ride the bike at highway speeds for 20 -30 minutes...repetedly rev the engine to a high RPM then shut the throttle closed. The repeted application of high engine vaccum to the enrichment diaphragms freed the stuck diaphragms and the fresh fuel cleaned any gum and varnish that caused the trouble. I've put 20,000 miles on it since then with no backfiring.

Do these bikes have starter clutch problems?

i worked for a large yamaha dealer. yes, those bikes are very well known for the starter clutch going out. it's about $85 to $125 in parts and about 1 to 1.5 hours labor. also, an oil filter relocator kit will save you money on servicing or changing your own oil.

Yamaha VStar 1100. Valve train noise after starter clutch repair.

Replaced One-way starter clutch on V-Star. Cam timing marks shown in Yamaha Manual do not match actual marks on rotor. Bike runs rough & has valve train noise. (Not tappets.) Sounds like the spring loaded lower split gear is chattering. I have pulled it apart 3 times. Once setting timing by the "T" on the rotor. Once on the line BEFORE the "T" and once on the line AFTER the "T". All of the springs and dowel pins are there. The valve clearance is right. The rear cyl cam sproket is dead on crank after crank. The front looks off by half a tooth - but I didn't break the front gears or the right case and it ran perfect before the repair.

The cam chain has stretched a bit making it look like its half a tooth out, the tensioner takes up the slack but makes the cam timing slightly out.
You could have timed the crank 280 degrees out
It should be timed on the T mark for one cylinder & on the I mark (if there is one) for the other.
The marks before the T mark are for ignition timing (firing marks)

Good Luck
Hope this helps.

hi,
you can check the oil level in your bike by using the "oil sight glass" at the lower part of engine in the left hand side of your bike, just below the left foot peg.there are two marks, the upper mark referring the maximum capacity for oil level and the lower mark showing the minimum level. The oil level can be anywhere between these two marks. Please make sure of two things while you check the oil level in your bike.

  • Run your engine for two min so that the oil is warm while you check the level.Never check the oil level in a cold engine.
  • Hold the bike in upright vertical position while checking the oil level.
I have provided an example picture showing the location of the oil filter in a Yamaha v-star.Hope your problem is solved. Please rate my solution as 8a0e22a.jpghelpful.Have a great day.

hi there this is a common problem with bikes the oil comes from a breather hose which is connected to your crankcase which blows and stops unwanted fibers getting into your bottom end i would firstly start by replacing your air-filter. if it is a huge puddle of oil you could be in a little bit of trouble. you may have piston rin or valve stem damage. if u test your compression on the engine it will let you know.. thanks ladjr2

Hi, Anonymous for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one.
