2000 Yamaha R6 leaking gas - coming out of winter

2000 Yamaha R6 leaking gas - coming out of winter storage. Ran perfect when put away. It seems that gas is leaking from upper half of the bike - the tank is extremely full of gas at this point. Any suggestions?

this is a carb model yes? if you stored bike with fuel tap on then it could be your carb floats stuck. there is nowhere on the engine itself that gas would be going. is it dripping from the tank? fuel petcock? fuel pump (probably under the tank) ethanol in gas can completely screw up pumps.

if it's a carb problem shut off gas, remove aircleaner let fuel in carbs evaporate for a week. get some Berrymans B12 spray carb cleaner and get a bunch of it in there, it will break down the gum/varnish from the gas. also get Berrymans B12 fuel additive and put some in the tank. re-assemble and see how it goes.

Tabbycat gave a very good answer. The pulse sensor could be the problem. If the sensor checks out okay then it is time to look at the rest of the CDI ignition. Next would be the carbs. ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher at hand when working on carburetors.

Drain the carburetors. There should be a screw on the lower side of each carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, (not all bikes have a water trap bowl). Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carbs to fill with gas. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetors from the engine.

FOR EACH
carb > Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the carb and spray into the screw holes as well.
< < READ CLOSELY > >
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Install an in-line fuel filter. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Also, sync the carbs such that the slides on all carbs move at the same exact instant when the throttle is slowly turned from idle speed.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Cleaning Carb Jets

If I clean my carbs will l have to adjust the pilot screw or sync the carbs --- is that going to happen by cleaning or replacing parts such as needle jet, needle valve, and carb jets? Syncing the carbs does not sound so bad if you have the vacuum presure gage but adjusting the pilot screw sounds like it would be tough.

You shouldn't have to adjust anything as long as you don't increase the jet size and put everything back the same way it is removed.

The TPS after installed must be adjusted and that is a delicate procedure so you better take it to a dealer's workshop. You should also check the fuel pump if it works properly.

SKU: 4TV-85885-00-00
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR ASSY Approximately $203.00

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. I checked and the TPS is in stock.

You could Google " motorcycle salvage yamaha " For about $100 they will sell the entire carb ( assuming one is available ). Before I did either option, I suggest you let the shop have a look at the bike. If the TPS is not the problem, you just wasted $200.

Connect a clear tube to the drainplug of each carb and secure them to side above the float chamber.

Make sure bike is on level ground and unscrew the drain screws about one turn or until you see the fuel rising up in the tube.

The fuel level should be between 11.5~12.5mm below the highest point of the float chamber line.

Always have a fire extinguisher handy when performing these tests

hello, get piston up on tdc, hold finger on spark plug hole turn engine untill finger blows off, that should be compression stroke. take screwdriver in hole make sure piston is all the way up, take timing cover off top gear, there is a v mark inside the motor , make sure gear marks and timing chain is all aligned upp, timing chaing should have a different colored link, aligned this with mark on gear-chain and the mark on the motor, it looks like a v or a point, you have to remone the top gear cover to see this, once they are all aligned it should be in time, piston has to be up all the way on compression stroke, really its pretty simple....

Problem with 2001 Yamaha R6 Coolant

I am having a problem with my cooling system for a 2001 Yamaha R6. My coolant reservoir is filling up and then leaking out the reservoir overflow tube. I checked the radiator cap and it is on tight. When opening up the the cap I noticed a lot of coolant is sitting on top in the radiator itself. Which makes sense because I am seeing the reservoir fill up fast because all the coolant in the radiator is going to the top. Don't know what the issue is though...

Most likely a blown head gasket. Exhaust gas is blowing past the gasket and into the cooling system. It will pressurise the cooling system and push the coolant into overflow bottle. You might notice that after riding the bike for a while and then leaving it to stand for a few minutes, it will push coolant back into the cylinder and you will get a big puff of steam out exhaust when you start it.
Best way to check is to do a compression test. Need to remove spark plugs and and screw a compression tester into the hole. Crank the starter and you will see the gauge go up in 3 or 4 strokes. Should be about 224 psi for a new stock motor. Repeat test for remaining 3 cylinders. Pressure should be 90% of that figure (201) and should not be more than 10% different from highest to lowest. Probably find one cylinder is really low.
