How 2 change a battery on a 1999 tdm 850

Hello! I used to own a 1991 XTZ (Off road version of your TDM) And the battery if I remember is behind the right side panel, these are a push fit so be careful when pulling them off. Gently pull towards yourself one edge at a time, If not right side try left. You'll be investigating under your seat too as there should be a tool kit in your tail piece to help remove battery.
Merry Christmas ans remember push the Blue FixYa button!

Oil level TDM 850 without oil level window

The tdm is a dry sump engine where the oil is in a tank under the seat and is pumped around the engine and returned to the tank by a scavenger pump in the bottom of the engine so a level window on the engine is not required

Battery dies on 03 yamaha after being ridden, battery wont hold charge..have replaced battery, stator, and regulator. wiring harness problem?

no not wiring harness! Unless the stator connector is unplugged. check to make sure the charging fuse is not blown. Should be a 20A or 30A fuse. When the bike is running test the battery to see if it is charging, should be between 13.25 volts and 14.5 volts.

My headlight is not very bright I have changed the

Hi,the voltage at the battery with engine running should be around 13.8 volts. There could be any number of reasons as to what the problem is.Check the battery connections, they may be loose or corroded both on the battery and in the case of the earth or negative connection, check the frame connection.

Instrument Dashboard went dead but bike continued to run.

I would never think a bike was smart enough to shut down unneeded accessories like that but then again I haven't been around many newer ones much. I would just charge it ride it and see if it happens again. if you get done riding and the battery reads low again that should answer your question

I have a yamaha tdm

Because of the higher voltages run in bikes nowdays to meet fuel regulations, spark plugs are often a big problem.Drop a new set of plugs in .It's the easiest and cheapest place to start. No dealers to rip you off.If this is not the problem,it would suprise me.Hope this helps

I get a disturbing noise

check chain tension and that the aft sprocket lines up directly with the front first, if its not that then take the front cover off the countershaft main gear drive and check for play maybe a bearing is worn out..

Oil sight glass misted up can not see oil level

There is no easy fix, you need to remove the complete cover and clean it from the inside with a pipe cleaner or similar.
You can usually reuse the gasket.
If you rest the bike on its side you can leave the oil in, and it doesnt mess up the workshop floor.

Back fires when starting runs irratic

Hi,

Offhand, may I suggest that you have the battery externally fully charged. Thereafter start/run the bike with the voltage regulator (rectifier) disconnected. Shorted diodes or transistor inside the regulator maybe responsible for the abnormal heat buildup and likewise the backfire and/or the intermittent engine run. The CDI may be cutting out if the voltage is higher.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello, my 1998 TDM 850

It sounds like you just need to flush your engine and clear out the sight gage.Get some good motor flush and a can of Marvel Mystery Oil. Go ahead and pour in the motor flush and Marvel.Run the bike at idle and about 2500 rpm back and forth for about 5 mins or so constant. Then drain it all out and replace with clean oil and filter. That should clear out whatever gunk you have in the engine.

Before replacing it, check the tensioner...it may be broken. Also check the guides. Make sure the cam sprockets aren't loose or cracked.
