1999 Yamaha V Star Classic - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
2001 YAMAHA VSTAR CLASSIC 650
It sounds like something mechanical in the hub of your rear wheel is broken. It will probably be quite expensive to fix. You ought to count yourself pretty lucky since when it broke a shard of gear or something could have lodged itself between the rapidly rotating final drive gears and locked the back wheel. The level of danger involved in that type of failure suggests to me that Yamaha designed the thing with preventing this from happening at the front of their minds
How do I know if I have enough oil in my 1999 v
Have a friend hold the bike upright. Then look through the oil level inspection window (with the motor off) and make sure the oil level is either between the high and low mark or up to the high mark.
What is the gas mileage on this bike that holds
You didn't say what size Star you had.
Mileage for the 650 is listed at 47mpg ---for the 1100 42.8mpg
The indicator on the petcock valve should have a P & R on it--- P, is primary, R is reserve. It's a simple design, with 2 different length pickups on it. So if you can't read the lettering on the valve. remove the fuel line going to the carbs. when your tank is low on fuel--- And you can determine how to set it. The pickup for the reserve gas will be on the back, or looking at it, right side of the valve.
The owners manual states to change oil every 4000 miles and filter every 8000
Personally, i change BOTH every 3000 miles. Clean oil is the key to keeping a V-twin engine happy and running for many miles. SAE 20w50 synthetic is what i use. I believe the manual calls for 20w40, which is fine for break in and while the bike is under warranty.
The choice is yours.
The Clymer service manual, is a handy tool to have. I recommend you get one. Ebay is a good place to find them along with Amazon....
I hope this helps & good luck with your Star...these are good bikes.
My 1600 roadstar back fires
sounds like it is getting to much fuel you may need to have carbs rejetted or the gas is bad as gas now has ethenol in it and bikes dont like it so i add seafoam to my gas and it works wonders i do this about 1 time every 2 weeks to keep everything cleaned

99% sure its clutch slip... try ajusting the cable to the right gap, failing that its the cable itself or the clutch plates.

How do i remove the
Hello,
The Yamaha R6 has two bolts that hold the riders seat on. You have to lift the foam and push forward at the rear end of the seat. The outer left and the outer right edge. If the bike is original it will be a 5mm allen head bolt and simply remove the bolts on both sides and then lift the rear of the seat up. The front of the seat has a lip that slides under the fuel tank bracket to secure it and simply slide it rearward and out.
Thanks and I hope that this helps.

Be sure to clean battery cables. Recharge battery and have it load-tested. This will tell you the condition of your battery.
What kind of oil goes
Any
oil with the JASO MA motorcycle certification. 10w-40 for cold climate,
20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Do not use any oil that says Energy
Conserving on the label. It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and
transmission gears. Synthetic oil will help your bike run cooler and
shift easier. You will need 4 quarts of oil , an oil filter, and a new
aluminum sealing washer for the drain plug.

It's OK to jump your bike from your car battery as long as the car is not running. Both are twelve volt systems. However , if the car is running it might damage the bikes electrical system. It sounds like you may have just blown a fuse. Check the fuse box and keep your fingers crossed.
