On older bikes the starter switch can start sticking and not fully return. The headlamp is commonly cut during starting to allow more power to the starter motor. But if the start switch does not fully return it can keep the headlamp off. Try juggling the switch with the bike running and see if the lights return. If they do then its time to take the switch apart and give it good cleaning and lubrication with electrolytic grease.

Some Yamahas are designed to shut off the headlight while cranking starter to conserve battery power.
I'm not sure your XJ was built that way...but other models have the same problem.......
The starter button has a set of contacts for headlight, and a set of contacts for starter circuit.....as you push in the button, the headlight contacts open first...then as you push further the starter circuit contacts close to crank the starter. If the button does not fully release after starting the headlight stays off. So try WD40 around the button edges and work the button in and out several times with key off, then see if your headlight works now.

I have a 1996 XJR1200 (not SP) and the front brakes are binding
Have you changed the brake fluid complete by getting all the trapped air and gunks out?
If you have done that, then remove the brake pads, force piston to come out more, clean around them with Brakleen spray and around piston seals, wipe with clean cotton cloth or use compressed air to ensure that piston surface is very clean and nothing stops free piston movements. Press piston in as close as possible to caliper wall, spray again with Brakleen then air dry to blast all dirt away. Do these 2 to 3 times then assemble everything back and try to see if piston still stuck. If it gives tight friction grip it is now fine, just spin the wheel and you should have a little friction but the whell should be able to turn at least 2 free turns.
