How hard is itto check and replace valve shims and

you check the clearance with a feeler gauge under the cam lobes, if they are out of tollerance, there is a special tool to get them out and change, or you have to remove the cams, mark everything and take notes of clearances and the numbers on the shims removed

Yamaha XJ600 diversion starter motor problem

sound like your starter gear might be missing a tooth or some other king of damage, this shouldnt be a costly repair, but I wouldnt ride too much as it is, if there is a chunk of the starter gear in the transmission, this could cause much damage and be very costly

I bought a 1992 yamaha secca 2 it runs great just concern will i need to reoplace anything

Go onto the XJ600 Riders forum online or via the Tapatalk app on your tablet and you'll get loads of bike specific advice there. I had a pre diversion / pre Seca model and they're pretty sturdy bikes tbh.

Have had a temporary repair

If you depend on this motorcycle to get here and there and you dont want to be broken down in the middle of the night while you are 'there' with no tools fo course, you should bet it repaired. It is a relative simple repair ... a piece of heavy cable with grommets on each end that runs from your start solenoid to the starter. The cable doesn't necessarily have to be in with the loom.

On the other hand, why spend the money. If it does break down, you can always push start (coast down the hill and pop the clutch) the motorcycle.
