Yes depending on the load just because you have water in the battery doesn't mean you don't have a shorted out cell in it. too much, and a spike or short in voltage will shut it down. a battery will only last you under good conditions on a bike will be 12 months. don't be a cheapskate get the battery checked and get you a manual for this bike it will help you in the long run. otherwise it sounds good. Also coils get hot and quit when they get hot and run when they cool. See a manual will help you troubleshoot it.

Battery is most likely - they drain fairly quickly when sitting and the electric start will kill one in 15-20 failed starts. Pull it, put it on a charger overnight, put it back in and try it again. Does it start with the kicker (assuming you have one)?

Hi,
The CDi usually breaks down when it gets an over voltage from the voltage regulator.
Try to replace the voltage regulator so that the CDi won't overheat.
Check also the ignition coil, it might have a short circuit it the connection terminal or the polarity is wrongly placed.

Hello, the XS400 Takes around 3 quarts of oil. There should either be a dipstick or window in the crankcase. The oil should be visible in the window,if it isnt add more until it is. If it has a dipstick for the oil, check the level, it should be up to the full mark but no higher. I hope I have helped you.

First check to see if the oil level in your crankcase is too high. If you have a vacuum petcock malfunction (hole in the diaphragm) or if the fuel petcock is left in the prime position and a float needle sticks, then you get you get gas running into the cylinders, past the rings, and into the oil.
When you start your motorcycle the oil/gas mixture has no place to go, the crankcase is too full, and the mixture exits through the crankcase breather into the air box where it will ruin a paper air filter. Always turn your fuel petcocks off when not driving. If the petcock diaphragms are bad rebuild the petcock with K&L rebuild kits or replace the fuel petcocks with new ones. If the float needles in the carburetors are bad or sticking, take the carburetors apart, clean them, and replace any worn or damaged parts You will have to change your gasoline saturated oil for it will no longer properly lubricate your motor.Just a note: in 1983 brand new Honda's would fill there engines in gas. All the components were clean and new. This can happen to any machine in any condition at any time. When not riding always turn off the fuel vales never leave them in the prime position.
