hi
im not sure if that is your starter
sounds more like the starter clutch
and for that you will need to remove your clutch cover
also the clutch cage
the starter clutch is located behind the clutch cage
remove the clutch cage
and the starter clutch is either on the rear of the cage or a separate unit
it looks like a ring the size of the clutch cage
and has slots in it with roller bearings the slide in and out the often stick because of old oil residue
and if they stick it stops your starter engaging with the clutch housing to turn your engine over
hope this helps
How to change centre spark plug on my thunderbird
I recently had to change my sparks on my 2002 thunderbird. It certianly wasn't a simple case of remove fuel tank as you still get the spine of the bike blocking your path. Any standard box spanner and even the Triumph spanner failed to get enough clearance to access the plug. Short of removing the whole engine block I removed the top cover of the engine and used a shorter 5" box spanner. Fiddly job but with the tools at hand worked. Unless someone knows of any specialist bendy spanners?
Whats the corect tyre pressures
Thank you for using Fixya, Raymond.
I would like to inform you that you can find the correct front and rear tire pressure of your Triump on your owner's manual. However, you can also check the average tire pressure on the sidewall of the rubber tire.
The headlight does not get brighter when the
Check all fuses for continuity. Check wires to stator for continuity and no open circuit. Use a multimeter and check voltage of battery when fully charged and check when cycle is started and revved up to about 2500 rpm should be much higher when running and revved 13 to 14 volts..Suspect a bad stator if all fuses and wiring checks good.
Throttle cable snapped. Is this an easy fix?
It depends on how handy you are but I would put the replacement of your throttle cable at an intermediate level at the least for experience if you are unsure on how to do it I would suggest taking it to a certified motorcycle shop.

Thunderbird Purchase.
You live near where someone could work on it if necessary? would be my only concern.
Bike jumps out of first gear about 75% of time
sounds like a worn out selector fork, or some part in the gear box that holds it into gear. Have you tried holding the gear lever down throughout first gear, then changing to second? Either way, the only way to fix it, is to have the gear box taken apart, and the worn out item replaced.
Can i use bridgestone tyres on my 2002
It is safe to ride ans long as you do not go over the rated tire speed, for insatnce a S rated tire qill be safe at 220 miles per hour, so keep in mind the tire rating and the speed you may be travling at ok?
Flatspot
I assume there is a problem with a flat spot in the power band.
If so then clean the carbs and air filter. If that isn't the problem then what is?

6th gear modification
Sixth Gear is an additional ratio.
The five speed bikes have a spacer on the shaft instead of the sixth gear, so the conversion is not so difficult for someone who knows what they are doing. The shifter drum also needs to be changed.
I've not done the conversion, but I have one six speed bike and one five speed bike.
Sixth gear is nice for highway use. In reality it only changes RPM at 70 mph by about 500 revs. But that is enough to make cruising at higher speeds a little more relaxed.
Is it necessary? Hmmm, I guess that depends on how much time you spend cruising on the Interstates. Personally I avoid Interstates most of the time, so I find it not much of a problem.
Good luck with your decision, and you are right now is the time to do it if you are going to.
Triumph Legend 1998 same as Thunderbird 900motorcycle running badly.
Was the bike working okay after the overhaul? Mis firing due to bad setup or very bad fuel.If it has not run right since the work was carried out ask the repairer to take a look.
If it only started to go awry after using wheap fuel, (it should still be of uniform quality with other fuel,)
I would drain the tank and refill with premium. Try not to get any air into the system if you do this, makes life easier
GOOD LUCK

Were is the drain plug for the forks
I'm not particularly familiar with your bike, most bikes the oil has to be dumped out of the top. Some have drain plugs at the very bottom, but with a little extra work you should take the tubes off and thoroughly drain and flush. Removing the tubes is pretty straight forward, supporting the front, removing bolts and nuts and speedo cable. I always recommend to spend a couple bucks and buy a service manual from say amazon. It's the best $$ you'll ever spend.
I cannot over emphasize to be OH SO careful taking the top plug out, it's spring loaded and capable of taking a couple teeth or pranging your nice car parked in the garage. A manual will lay it all out, how to inspect and type/quantity of oil. With only 2 wheels keeping you off the pavement, an inexperienced job on one is ill afforded.
