1988 Suzuki GSX 600 F (Katana) Questions & Answers
How do I lower rpm so idle is correct? it's stable around 5k rpm which is too high
Yea, that is way too high. Thankfully your bike is nice and old so idle adjustment is simple. Look for a knob in between the 2nd and 3rd cylinders carburetors. This should be accessible without removing any bodywork, but I'm not certain with your bike. You should set your idle to something between 1~2k rpm when the bike is fully warmed up. If your carb hasn't been serviced in awhile having it idle at 2k rpm will be more stable.
1988 Katana gsx 600 only one ignition coil is getting power
yes there is a way to test if there bad but its some work first take off the gas tank, then find your spark cable, trace them back to your ignition coils that may be were the problem is coming from.(im having the the same problem with my 1988 katana gsx600f) now how to test if there good or not is eazy.First; pick a ignition coil to check. Second; pull off one of the spark cables then the park pug make sure u do it one at a time.Third; now that u have the spark pug out of the engine plug it into the spark cable then try to start the bike will your doing this make sure the spark pug it close to touching the engine so that u can see if its sparking if it is go on n check to see if the other three are working. thats how i found my problem....now how my bike was acting before well it started but didnt want to start started it kept trying to die so i check the carbs the wiring n the fuse n nothing. now i tought it was my wiring because every one was telling me that so i replace my maintance harness n still the same problem. so one day i was thinking to my self "man what is going on in my babys mind". so i tryed to start it n listen for any weird sound. as i sat there listening i could only hear the bike trying to fire on one igniting.well it sound like there was enough power n i just charged the battery so i knew it wasnt that which lead me to the problem which was a bad ignition coil.... i hope i have been some kind of help well thank for reading n i hope u find out what your problem is...
How to hook up vacuum lines on a 1988 suzuki katana 600
You must hook them on each niple has each carburator right before it's cylinder head's collar that is plugged on. One of them has the vacuum hose that goes to your fuel switch, pull it out and put the switch to PRI position or feed the carburators externaly. The other nipples are plugged with blind plugs which you remove to plug the vacuum hoses and then replace them back on.
Clutch does not disengage
clutch cable is broken, or clutch lever is not adjusted correctly, or might be low fluid, or air in system.
How much oil do i need when doing an oil change on
oil for motorcycles come in 4 ltr bottles as standard.this is more than enough for your bike.3.4litres will do the trick.also you should have a spy glass on the side of the engine caseing so you can see the oil level.there will be a low mark and high mark on the caseing.if you dont have a spyglass then you should have a dipstick attached the the oil filler cap.make sure the bike is level when you fill the bike with oil.once done run the bike for a minute then turn off and allow to stand for 5 mins and check the oil level.top up if nessasary
Hi i just got a 1988 gsx600f i put new plugs in it
it seems odd that your coils would play up, usally the they just stop working. You talk of it bogging down? , i would suggest that to be a carby problem, especialy if the bike has sat around for a while. first try to just drain the carbys, as you can do this without removing them, should be a drain screw or plug on the bottom of the carby. Make sure your air filter is clean too!
I have a 89' 600 katana gsxr. the trans is stuck in
Unforturntly yes! When you have it apart may as well freashen up the hole motor. If it need seals replace, if it need bearings replace, Messure the cyclinders and pistons and rebore and replace pistons, rings, gaskets ext ext. Being a 89 it would have alot of mile on it and if you rebuild the engine you will have a fresh engine and will have trouble free miles for a long time.
I'm a first time buyer and i'm intersted in buying
There are some problems with the alternator which charges the battery. Not a huge problem, but added to the other issues I would pass. Rebuild of carbs will help with the acceleration, but it also sounds like it needs a transmission rebuild as well. It shouldn't pop out of gear it either has bad syncros or gears in the transmission. Cost to fix this will be more than the added price of a newer well running bike. Unless of course you can do it yourself.
Need connection pictures from the carburators to
http://www.metal-fab.net/files/1988-1997-GSX600-750-1100F-R.pdf complete service manual download but to make it easier for you.... short line between carbs 1 and 2 goes to the rear facing nipple on petcock. line between carbs 3 and 4 goes to the front facing nipple on the petcock and the vacuum line on the side of carb 4 goes to the nipple on the petcock that is facing away from the fuel knob. the 2 other lines on the carbs are just float bowl overflows that get criss crossed across the carbs and draped down the sides they are only there to keep the gas from flooding your motor if you dump your bike. hope this helps
