Hey, I have a 2009 kx450,

Y ou F ed up big time with the shim. Try flushing the crankcase with the drain open and use a magnet or magnetize a peice of metal wire and try to fish it out if not you will have to split the cases. The rest is no big deal as long as you know where # 1 cylinder is and the cams are installed so the valves work you set up on # 1 and every should fall into place. good luck

The easiest way to get into the gear box

It sounds like you have bent the gear shaft.
Remove the right hand side engine cover, and probably the clutch as well. The gear shaft can then be unhooked from the selecter drum and pushed out,(the shaft goes right through the engine), this may be dificult if the gear stick end is very bent, when its removed dont try to straighten it, get a new one, and a new seal and rhs gasket. 2006 ?probably old enough to fit a new water pump seal while the cover is off

My kx450f hasnt been started in 2 months and now

Your bike has a computerized ignition module or AC-CDI. I suspect the storage of you bike may have allowed the battery to discharge below the minimum voltage required for the ignition module to function. Charge the battery and also drain a small amount of gas from the bottom of the carb(s). Note whether there is free flow of gas from the tank to refill the carb bowl(s).

Take the fuel line loose at the carborator and drain into a can. Or you can shut the gas valve off and remove the tank and drain it by turning it over

Slight rattle in the valve cover

have you had the valve lash set recently? if you ride hard or race you should check this every 3-4 rides.. if valve lash is within spec, you may be hearing the fly weights for the decomp. system, this is fairly normal..if it is bothersome to you, replace the fly weights & springs if the parts are available, if not you may haveto replace the complete cam.
