2005 Honda VFR 800 fuse box location
Under the small black panel to the left and below the instrument cluster. The main 30 amp system fuse is located beside the battery. there should also be a spare fuse there. Do not replace or Jump this fuse untill you find out why it has blown.

Are you sure the problem is actualy on the dash, problems in any system on the bike can cause failure of any of the items on the instrment pannel, you dont say what the actual problem is in relation to the dash, if you suspect the earth is a problem, eliminate it by running a new wire direct from the neg side of the battery or the engine to the green wire on the dash, if this works then you will have to do a continuaty test on the original green to earth make sure it is working. If no continuaty is present you may have a broken wire or corroded conection inside 1of the connector blocks

The problem is usually a weak battery. When cranking, it pulls down the system so much that the clock resets. Try puting the batt on a charger and start the bike to see if the clock resets with a steady feed of voltage.

Pull the cover and see if you applied too much gasket maker which could be blocking your oil drain back holes. IF that is the problem you risk/risked trashing the engine because too much of the limited supply of engine oil was stuck in the cover instead of moving around in the rest of the engine.
Battery always dead
Did you check the power regulator? It can 'collapse' under a load, while it looks perfect when measuring the resistances.
Does your rectifier have cooling fins?

Remove the inner panel
Pull off the socket without turning
Remove the dust cover
Remove the bulb while pressing down the pin
Pull out the bulb without turning noting its position
Instal new bulb in reverse order
Place the cover back on with the arrow mark facing up
Runs rough under 3500 rpms, ok above 3500 rpms
Some Honda's have slow running (below 3500 rpm) coils and fast running over (3500 rpm) coils. they are behind the engine cover on the side but could be at the front, depending on the bike. Sounds like your slow running coil is breaking or broken.
