Find the lowest point by the bottom radiator hose, there should be a drain port for the cooling system, or just loosen the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant out into a bucket. The thermostat should be below the housing that has the top radiator hose connected to it. Change it only when the engine is cool otherwise you will be scalded by the hot coolant.

To change your oil you will need 4 quarts of oil, a filter, and a new aluminum drain plug washer. You can reuse the old drain plug washer if it has not been squished out of shape. Your drain plug is located on the left underside of the motor, part # 20 on the diagram.

To change your oil you will need 4 quarts of oil, a filter, and a new aluminum drain plug washer. You can reuse the old drain plug washer if it has not been squished out of shape. Your motorcycle comes from Honda usually with 10w-40 mineral base motorcycle oil. You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Your oil filter is located on the back side of the motor in front of the rear wheel. Part # 10.

Pour in three quarts of oil to reach the high mark on the dip stick or inspection window. Make sure the motorcycle is upright or on the center stand when checking the level . You will probably need 3.2 to 3.4 quarts to hit the high mark. Run the motor for a minute or two to fill the oil filter compartment with oil. Now recheck the oil level and top up as needed. If you want to try an inexpensive full synthetic oil that is JASO MA rated 15w-40 Shell Rotella T Synthetic fits the bill at about $22 per gallon. All brands/manufacturers make a motorcycle oil. Some are very hard to find. Just make sure that the oil you pick has the JASO MA Japanese engine Rating to protect your motorcycle engine.

There are two set screws on the throat of the intake. One is the high side and the other is the low side. You need to turn the high side about 1/4 turn clockwise. If it is still rich, do it again until it is nominal.
Can you tell me how to change the chain and
I don't have any experiance with your particular bike but have changed them on many different bikes to date. You should first purchase a new chain and sprokets and compare them to the existing one prior to removal as you won't be able to refit the old one safely. You are checking for the correct amount of teeth on the sprockets and the amount of links in the chain.
Once satisfied that you have the corrrect parts. Remove the front sprocket cover and locate the front sprocket. Most large bikes will have a large nut holding it on. Smaller bikes will use a tab washer and or circlip. If you have a large nut i find the easiest way to loosen it is to put a lock or similar through the rear wheel to immobilise it and then with a breaker bar loosen the nut. Once free change the sprocket over, then move to the rear sprocket loosing each nut in turn but making sure you are appling pressure to the nut squarely as it is easy to cross-thread these smaller nuts. This is best achevied by leaving the wheel on the bike until all the nuts are free. Remove the wheel and change the rear sprocket. Once done you are now ready to remove the chain from the swing arm. You can either cut it off with an angle grinder or you a chain link tool as i do.
Now the chain is split. Connect the new chain to one end and feed it through. Detach the new from the old and then rivet both ends together using a chain tool as described in the tools specific instructions.

2005 Honda Shadow knocks when idling
Well, How does it run otherwise? If the fuelpetcock on the tank is set in the wrong position the endine can be overfueling. Make sure the fuel valvre is not on pri or res. and give it a chance to clear up. If truly interested then truly ck it out by reokacing the fuel instead of puttung additives in it. Fresh fuel will also help clean the system of old residue.- Good luck
I have a 2005 Honda Shadow VT600CD oil light is on
Did oil light come on before you serviced it? Have you checked oil? If oil is low then light will come on. Does the bike have an oil filter? If the light was on before the person serviced it and it has an oil filter, then they must have not changed the oil filter. A clogged oil filter will reduce oil pressure and turn light on. Do you have the manual that came with the bike? In there it should tell you the specific reason for the light. Whether it is oil pressure or low oil level or both. I hope this helps
Checking timing chain
They are a bit noisy sometimes, hopefully it's nothing serious, good solid bikes those so you should be good.
Check you have the correct oil in there, if your running a thin oil, it may increase the noise and wearing.
Try this, when its parked up and idling cold (when you start it up in the morning) get a screwdriver or somthing similar place the metal part of the screwdriver on the engine where you think the noise is coming from, then put your ear on the handle, doing this you will be able to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from buy moving the screwdriver around the casting also you can really hear her tick.
do it again when she's hot noting the difference of any. If it continues to get noisier, strip her down and have a look in there, could be just the tensioner/guides.
good luck
I have a 1996 Honda
The OHC gear must come off the cam and the cam chain must be held with a wire so that it doesn't fall into the gearbox when the head is removed. You are getting into an area best avoided by the do-it-yourself rider. After remounting the cam gear, the camshaft set MUST be installed with the gear timing marks in the proper position. Otherwise the piston will come upward and bend the valves. Don't try it without a service manual. You can do a
free download at the website below. I checked and your manual is on the list. You will need a torque wrench when installing the cam and the head.
