Sounds like you need a new air filter.Mine does the same thing, except I'll get a backfire through the air filter right on my knee and scares the **** out of me every time.
How do i get to the battery?
Take off your right side cover, unbolt the fuse plate cover that is covering the battery, slide the battery toward you and unbolt the terminals with a 10mm wrench.

It sounds like time to clean the carburetors. Just for fun, remove the screw on the side of the carb float bowl. Is gas even getting into the carbs? Check the fuel valve on the tank. Is gas flowing freely when the valve is open? I would install a set of new spark plugs and add an in-line fuel filter also.
Checking timing chain
They are a bit noisy sometimes, hopefully it's nothing serious, good solid bikes those so you should be good.
Check you have the correct oil in there, if your running a thin oil, it may increase the noise and wearing.
Try this, when its parked up and idling cold (when you start it up in the morning) get a screwdriver or somthing similar place the metal part of the screwdriver on the engine where you think the noise is coming from, then put your ear on the handle, doing this you will be able to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from buy moving the screwdriver around the casting also you can really hear her tick.
do it again when she's hot noting the difference of any. If it continues to get noisier, strip her down and have a look in there, could be just the tensioner/guides.
good luck

The OHC gear must come off the cam and the cam chain must be held with a wire so that it doesn't fall into the gearbox when the head is removed. You are getting into an area best avoided by the do-it-yourself rider. After remounting the cam gear, the camshaft set MUST be installed with the gear timing marks in the proper position. Otherwise the piston will come upward and bend the valves. Don't try it without a service manual. You can do a
free download at the website below. I checked and your manual is on the list. You will need a torque wrench when installing the cam and the head.

It could just be that the carb is gummed up. The first thing usually worth trying is running some SeaFoam or a similar carb cleaner through the engine.
1) You want to find a liquid carb cleaner (one that is added to your gas tank)
2) Empty your gas tank (either by running the bike or draining the tank)
3) Put some SeaFoam in the tank
4) Fill the tank up and run the bike
The container will probably tell you how much SeaFoam to add for a car. Take a third of that number to figure out how much to put in your bike.
I've found this solution to work as a great first attempt for a variety of engine problems on my Honda motorbike. Hope it helps.

Locate the wires coming out of the motor. There is a plug with three yellow wires, check the three yellow wires coming out of the motor for continuity. Any combination of the three yellow wires should have continuity. But there should be NO continuity between any of the three wires and ground. If any of the yellow wires are grounded you have a bad stator. If the stator checks good you probably have a bad voltage regulator/rectifier.

Take a piece of wire or a screw driver and short the terminals on the solenoid. If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, you need new starter brush's.If you take the starter apart and do not have continuity between every other armature contact, just buy a new starter and put it in.
