It's perfectly normal for an engine with a carb to have an air filter that smells like gasoline. The reason being is because of a concept called "fuel stand off" - in a nutshell, the air that is going through your carbs towards the cylinders gets bounced back towards the air filter when the intake valves close. Since carbs aren't that smart, the air coming back towards the filter picks up even more fuel from the float bowl, and then heads in to your air filter box to say hello.

Shop manual will have lower end overhaul in engine section. Your looking for plain bearing set up. Which uses Plasti guage method of color and crush width to determine correct bearing size.

Check the cams also the steering bearing. Both is difficult to check
but that were the things I heard. It also has problems with overheating
at the rear cylinders.
Keep in mind that is 15 years old, very very heavy and you will
recognize
it while driving. I'm satisfied with Metzeler tires on it. You won't
get any newer tires fitting to the 16" front wheel.
If it runs, it runs great, but very difficult for maintenence.

Question edited for a bit more clarity. Question moved to Honda model category. Well the obvious thing to do it take coil 1/4 and swap it with coil 2/3. Does the error move? If it does, you need a new coil. If it doesn't you move to the ignition module. In my day it was ignition points! Check the wiring, especially the engine earth lead.

On the bottom of your speedometer on the left side there is 2 buttons press the far left one for a couple of seconds and the light should go on
