To adjust the clutch, follow the clutch cable down to the frame front downtubes and find the cable adjuster. It's usually covered with a rubber bellows. Slide the bellows up or down exposing the adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and turn the cable adjuster in all the way getting as much slack in the cable as possible.

Then take the derby cover off the primary. In the center of the clutch assembly, you'll see an adjuster screw and a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut. Turn the adjuster screw inward until you feel a resistance. DO NOT FORCE THE SCREW OR YOU'LL BREAK YOUR INNER CLUTCH HUB. If you need to, back the screw out and turn it back in just till you feel the resistance several times to get the feel of it. Once you feel the resistance, back the screw off 1/2 turn and lock the lock nut down.

Then, go back to the cable adjuster and turn the adjuster barrel out until you have about 1/8 inch of freeplay in the cable. Tighten the lock nut and replace the rubber bellows. Replace the derby cover.

Well, yes it is somewhat normal, you have hot rodded it up. What happens is a bit of unused gas now gets buy the cylinder and explodes in the pipe instead of the cylinder. It happens due to scavenging, the new shorter pipes and the better filter allow more fuel to move quicker. If she has a carburetor it will need to be re-jetted but still may shoot flames. If fuel injected she will need dealer help.

Open belt drives are for one thing and, in my opinion, one thing only, looks. Personally, I wouldn't have one. They look plain dangerous to me.

The biggest problem people have with them is belt breakage. Harley came out with two models that had dual belt drives, the Surgis models and the FXDG "Disc Glide" in 1984. Both models used the same type of belt drive which was a fairly narrow belt. Owners were plagued with belt breakage problems and some even converted the bikes to chain drive like the rest of the bikes Harley made had on them.

I'm sure belt drives have improved since then but as to what the advantages of a belt drive is over a chain drive, I have no idea. Some say that it reduces maintenance, a claim that I don't buy. My vote is against it but then, It is your bike.

Using a tape measure (or visual estimation, if necessary), grasp the chain at a point halfway between the front and rear sprockets, and pull it up and down. The chain should be able to move roughly one inch up and one inch down. If your motorcycle is on a rear stand or centerstand, note that the swingarm will drop if the wheel is lifted from the ground, which will affect the rear geometry and the tension in the chain; compensate accordingly, if necessary. Because motorcycle chains can stiffen in certain spots and stay pliable in others, it's important to roll the bike forward (or turn the rear wheel if it's on a stand) and check all sections of the chain. If it moves more than about an inch, the chain will need tightening, and if it's too tight, loosening will be in order; this is outlined in subsequent steps. If individual chain links are too tight, the chain might need replacement.

Follow these guidelines every three to six months to extend the life of your low-maintenance Interstate battery: 1) Maintain Water Level. If your battery has removable vent caps, you should regularly check the water level and add water when it is low. 2) Keep Terminals Clean. Visually inspect the terminals and cables at least once a year, especially in hot temperatures, for signs of corrosion. If dirty or corroded, clean the connections with a scraper and wire brush. This will ensure a good connection and proper starting. 3) Keep Case Clean. Keep the top of the battery clean of heavy dirt and oil with a cloth dampened by ammonia or a 50/50 solution of baking soda and water. Then rinse with clear water and allow to thoroughly dry. 4) Keep Battery Charged. If your vehicle is not driven weekly, it may be necessary to charge your battery before use. Lack of use is hard on a battery, especially an automotive battery which is designed to be charged regularly by an alternator. Any unused battery, regardless of its chemistry, will self-discharge over time and, if allowed to remain discharged, will undergo severe positive grid corrosion and battery failure. The rate of discharge depends on the type of battery and the storage temperature. So, it's important to keep your battery charged. If you prefer that your mechanic take care of your battery, be sure to ask him to maintain the water level and to keep the connections and case clean of corrosion and dirt.

You didn't say what year or model your bike is. Since you say your "bendix" comes out and spins, I'm assuming you're talking about a Shovelhead. If you can stop your Bendix from spinning with your ifnger, it's bad. Replace it with a good American made replacement. The "nut" on the end of the starter shaft has two flats on it. It also has left handed threads. Simply take that nut off and replace your Bendix. Accel makes a decent unit for a reasonable cost.
