My 2017 Forty Eight (1200) with Fuel Injection has the exact same problem...at random it will begin sputtering either alot or just mildly...the other moment it runs fine...did you ever find a solution?

Had the same problem on my 2003 years ago, and corrected the issue by replacing the wires in the headlight shroud and the connection plug. (Wires were somewhat fried for some reason, and were reducing voltage at the terminals, causing a high current condition.

check for a jammed clutch cable not letting the clutch engage

Main circuit breakers were a problem on the older bikes, problem being when over heated the would pop and you would lose all power to the bike. Now if you bike is dying and you still have power and are able to crank it but it wont start, then I'd be looking at you CPS not the main breaker. One way to tell if it's CPS is to remove it when bike doesn't start. Wipe all the oil off, take a can of compressed air blow it on the CPS to cool it down, put back in bike and start it, If it starts then the sensor is bad.

Depending on how your bike is setup and IF it's an orginial tank or aftermarket tank on the bike, one of the caps are basicallly a dummy cap, (For Looks) and is NOT removable.

Get oil hot then remove 5/8 inch hex with 1/4 inch Allen socket in middle drain plug on rear frame down tube by rear wheel on right side and catch oil as it comes out.

Your anti theft system is activating when it flashes. You need to push the button on your key fob to disarm it. When you do the flashers should flash once or twice to signal that it is armed/disarmed. If it does not, try replacing your battery in your fob. or use the anti theft codes with your ignition switch and turn signal buttons. Check your users manual to do that.

I wouldn't recommend jumping at the starter. check your syl. switch to see if the fire is going threw and the switch on your handle bars .

Tap cover gently with a rubber hammer between passes.

Make sure you have not knocked loose the alternator cable. Usually close to the oil filter. Sometimes when removing the oil filter it will come loose and you won't be charging your battery while you ride.

The Oil Capacity is 3.5 qts. (3.3 L) are you sure you pulled the right drain plug, and drained the ENGINE oil? The engine oil drain hex bolt is located on the right side of the motorcycle and is removed/installed horizontally.
Transmission oil drain hex bolt is located on the left side of the motorcycle and is removed/installed vertically.

Unscrew the trans dipstick. It is on the right side of the bike, on the trans cover (where the clutch cable goes in) and has an allen head on it. Stand the bike upright and level. Insert the dipstick until it sits on top of the threads, don't screw it in. Pull it out and make sure the oil level is between the add and full marks.

The float may be stuck against the side of the gas tank. This was a common problem with Softails. Try taking the top plate off the tank and bending the float arm away from the tank. You will want to replace the top gasket and 10 sealing screws when you put the bike back together. Sealing screw should be part number 1311D.
