Is the clicking noise coming from the starter? If it is I would say your bendix is shot and needs to be rebuilt.

Kickstand spring came off

Take the bolt off holding the kick stand on. Then put the spring on. Now you have the needed leverage to once again line up the kick stand back into position to put the bolt back in.

Howdy, 1996 XL, was warming up,

Check the fuse for the ignition. I think on that year model the fuses were located behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike.

Good Luck

1989 XLH1200 will not shift

Try shifting through the gears with the engine off and rocking the bike back and forth. If it still does not shift, the only thing you can do is to pull the transmission out and check the shifting mechanism. It could be several different things but in any case, the transmission has to come out.

Good Luck

It sounds like the shifter pawl is broken in the primary. You'll have to pull the primary cover off and take the engine sprocket, primary chain, and clutch assembly off to get to the shifter pawl.

Im helping my friend put

You must be talking about the clutch adjuster nut and the lock nut on the sportster clutch release mechanism. The internally threaded nut with the adjuster nut goes in first and it is used to adjust the clutch. With the clutch cable as loose as you can get it. Turn the adjuster screw counter clockwise as far as it will go. Then turn it back clockwise 1/4 turn. Now, align the adjuster screw so that the "floating" unthreaded nut will go in hole. This prevents the adjuster from turning and acts as a lock nut. Then the spring goes in and finally the derby cover. Go to http://www.bikebandit.com and look up your bike under the OEM parts section. You should be able to find an exploded view of your clutch.

Good Luck

I Have A '95 Harley

If the stator is putting out 43 volts AC and you have a new regulator, you should be reading between 14.5 and 15.0 volts DC at the battery when the engine is at a high idle. Check the voltage regulator for a good ground. I always put one of those "star" type lockwashers between the frame and the regulator on both mounting bolts to make sure it's got a good ground. The rest of the stuff you mentioned (coil, breaker, ect) don't have anything to do with the charging. There should be a red wire going to the positive post of the battery along with the large battery cable that goes to the starter. Make sure this wire has a good connection. Your regulator has three wires that come from it. Two go to a plug from the stator and one goes to the battery. The schematic I have shows it going through the main fuse.

good luck

When I turn off the

A Harley-Davidson engine, unlike the Japanese engines, have a very heavy set of flywheels. Because of the wieght of these flywheels, the engine will not stop as quickly as the other engines on the market. This is why Harley-Davidson motorcycle have the torque that they do. As for the backfiring through the carb, if your bike has the stock jetting in the carb, it's probably a bit too lean. This is set so that the engine can pass the EPA's emissions standards test. If you richen the slow speed jet up to the next larger size, this problem will be solved. As for the backfiring if you don't allow the engine to warm up enough, any engine equipped with a carburetor will do this when it's cold. A fuel injected engine has an engine temperature sensor that keeps the fuel mixture on the rich side until the engine reaches full operating temperature. There's nothing wrong with your bike, Ride it to Sturgis.

91 sportster 1200 wont start

I'm assuming you checked all of the basics; battery, ground, etc. Have you tried jumping out the starter relay? It could be that the relay has bad contacts and even though you can hear it click, it's not energizing the starter. If it's good, try tapping the starter motor with a wrench or small hammer while holdin the start button down; if it begins to crank, you have sticky brushes in the starter motor.
