possible failure of the coil when it gets hot check with a harley bike electrician as to if the coil is straight 12 volts or is reduced to 7.5 volts when running if it is 7.5 volts when running but you have 12 volts all the time , that indicates a problem in the resistor circuit ( shorted across at the ign switch) and the 12 volts will over heat the coil and cause the indicated probkem

helpful hint with this starter problem' firstly Harley starters rely on a 4 brush system 2 negative and 2 positive ..if you have to tap the starter with a hammer or something else you are making the brushes make better contact with the armature...if all four brushes are not making contact the starter will only have half power and will try and spin over then stop...if you persist in trying to start it this way then there will be damage to the armature contacts and the solder will melt damaginging the unit big time best cure is remove starter and replace starter brush kit ...cost $20 plus labor also looking at the vid clip that when working on Harley is always best to use thread lock..blue on any thread in a motor that unbolts or unscrews lots of luck MotorCycle Services

check for loose bulb connection or loose wires or earth wire
