20 Most Recent 2005 BMW R 1200 GS - Page 3 Questions & Answers

You have not provided much information to go on so it is very hard to give you any help with this. For example, what do you mean by cut out. Do you mean the engine stops or the starter motor stops. Any where have you got the feedback from. Is it a diagnostic from the computer, or just a well meaning friend who is guessing. Questions like this are very hard to answer without a lot of information so you need to try and give as much as possible. If it is a fuse that is tripping, then this will be due to an overload on the circuit and you will need to get someone with the skills to diagnose it, such as a BMW repairer.

ELECTROHYDRAULIC CENTER STAND (EHCS)

I don't know anything about it, but I read other discussions that included owners and mechanics damaging the device when servicing it.

Hi, Robert, the vast majority of service, parts fiche, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee of $15 and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available and some were never printed in English. The Indian and Philippine markets are usually in E-book format only, for these rare occasions I shall look on eBay and find the cheapest one available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. If there is no $ sign after the manual link it is free to download.

Your best bet is to join a forum on BMW motorcycles and ask if anyone has one or the pdf files for one. Otherwise you are going to have to choke up the cash.

Hey Robin,
When you collapsed your suspension, it hydraulically "locked" down.. now that it has returned to normal, it should be OK...as long as it works smoothly and does not bind... ....be careful.. rubber side down=always!!

The threads are bad. If you cannot get under the head of the plug or use vice grips to pull it out, then you are going to have to remove the whole sump pan.

Hi, Derek sounds like you have a faulty battery or charging system in order to check out any main electrical system, you have to start with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better, and be able to pass a load test if necessary. "WARNING" never plug or unplug any electrical connector with the engine running !!!
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Check voltage at the battery with the bike running at 3,600 RPM should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you might have a faulty voltage regulator.
4. Make sure voltage regulator is "GROUNDED" and functioning properly, watch the video below on how to test a voltage regulator.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the multimeter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty rotor, follow step 6
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the multimeter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator multimeter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

if you can get the specifications they can be tested
( best done by a service center with the equipment)
generally a clean using vinegar will remove the oxide build up that affects their performance unless it is a wiring problem in which case , replacement will be required
be careful as there are 2 oxygen sensors in use
one has 4 wires and is a heated oxygen sensor and the other is an oxygen sensor with 2 wires
