Most modern spark plugs are already set to the correct gap when you buy them. Some plugs have special coatings on them that will break if you try to re-gap them damaging the plug and you'll have to replace them even though they are still new. If you are in ANY doubt buy the spark plugs recommended by Honda. I would suggest you DON'T buy the really cheap Amazon ones as they are poor quality, don't lat very long and can cause problems because of that. You mean the ignition is retarded and backfiring through the exhaust? It might be ignition timing is a bit late, It might be too rich mixture and unburned fuel is igniting. Or the exhaust valve is sticking open a little sometimes. All can be tested.
