Starter clicks does not start

Is it the starter or the starter relay clicking? If as you say it is the starter this usually leads to worn brushes and or armature comuntator in the starter. This can often be confirmed by tapping with somthing solid such as a large wrench on the starter while holding the button depressed. If the starter tries to operate while tapping a starter rebuild is in order. Good luck!

Gear box and crankcase oil amounts

You have THREE oil 'compartments' on your particular year&model bike.

(1) The ENGINE OIL
---( which holds 3 to 3.5 quarts or liters of oil).
---On the right side of the bike, and at the rear of the ENGINE OIL TANK, you should notice a Hose that is connected to the oil tank. Follow that Hose downward.
The other end of that hose will either :

----A: Be connected to the bottom of the frame,
OR
----B: Have a Metal Plug in the end of the hose. That 'plug' will be held in the hose via a hose clamp, and also will be secured to the frame via a 'clip' that is actually part of the frame).

-- IF(A): the Hose leads from the tank and is attached to the frame, you will notice a hex-head plug (that also has a hex-cutout in it's center for insertion of a hex or allen key) underneath the part of the frame that the hose is attached to. Remove/Unscrew that Hexplug from the frame to drain the engine oil.

--IF(B): the hose that leads from the Oil Tank has a "HosePlug" that is inserted into the end of the hose, remove that plug to drain the engine oil.

*Removal of the Enging Oil DIPSTICK, located at the mouth/fill area at the top of the Tank will aid in a faster flow of oil from the tank. When done draining, re-install the drain plug.

-When changing the engine oil, also remove and install a new Oil Filter.

*Put in no more than 3 quarts/liters of oil into the Engine Oil Tank.
*Ride your bike for min. of 10 minuets, then park and shut down the engine, wait for about 2 minuets, and check the level via the Dipstick. Proper oil level will be at or just below the 'FULL' mark of the dipstick.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(2) The TRANSMISSION OIL:

On the right side of the motorcycle, the
TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER PLUG/DIPSTICK is located on the foward facing side of the Transmission End Cover. The Trans End Cover is the cover that the Clutch Cable goes into. The Trans Fill/Dipstick has a Hex/Allen cutout in it for insertion of a hex/allen key to remove it.

The Trans DRAIN PLUG is either located either:
A: -Located on the Transmission Case, JUST BELOW the Trans End Cover. If here, the "Drain Plug" will be a TORX fastener. Remove that Torx fastener to drain the Trans Oil.
OR
B: -Located UNDERNEATH the Trans Case, in between the two Shock Absorbers. If here, the 'Drain Plug" will be a HexPlug that is the same type drain plug as described earlier for the engine drain.

TRANSMISSION OIL QUANTITY is as follows:
** 600 ml. for a 5-speed transmission.
OR
** One Full Quart/Liter for a 6-speed Transmission.

******Use the Trans Dipstick to verify that the level is correct. Between the FULL and ADD mark, or at the FULL mark.

ALSO NOTE: Drain, and Check your Oil when the bike is level. Have a friend assist you if needed. You don't want the bike falling, and/or landing on you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(3) The PRIMARY OIL

Located on the LEFT SIDE of motorcycle, the PRIMARY HOUSING connects the Engine Crankshaft TO the Transmission Output Shaft via a Primary Chain, which is lubricated by an oil bath.

(Make sure the Engine Run/Stop Switch is in the STOP or OFF position).

Remove the DERBY COVER (the Large round cover, with 5 Torx Fasteners. With the bike level, you should note that the oil level come to approx. just past the bottom of the Clutch Basket.

The Primary DRAIN PLUG is located: either at the

(A) Left Face of the Outer Primary Cover, below the Derby Cover.
If so, it will be a TORX or HEX/ALLEN fastener. It is NOT the same as the Hex/Allen fasteners that surround the Outer Primary Cover securing it to the Inner Primary Cover.

OR

(B) Located UNDERNEATH and ON the Outer Primary Cover, just below the Derby Cover area. It will either be a HEX FASTENER, or a Torx Fastener.

-Remove the Drain Plug to drain the Primary Oil.
-Reinstall the drain plug and fill (thru the Derby Cover Area) with ONE QUART/LITER of PRIMARY OIL.

****** BE SURE to clean and coat the threads of each Drain Plug with Teflon Paste thread sealant. NOT THREAD LOCKER.

****** BE SURE NOT TO OVER TIGHTEN THE DRAIN PLUGS.

If you are unclear of anything I wrote, please dont' hesitate to get in touch with me through here.
Good Luck , and THANK YOU.

Snap rings on what mounting studs? Harley uses part numbers and they don't tell you the size of the snap rings but If you'll give me a bit more information, I'll try to get a measurement for you.

Push the start button on my 94 fatboy. Will not

If you're saying that the new battery will not start your bike but when you jump the battery in the bike, it will, I'd say you have a problem with the new battery. When you "jump start" any vehicle by connecting another battery to your battery, you're connecting the batteries in parallel. This keeps the voltage the same but adds the current capabilities of the two batteries together. You either don't have enough battery or your starter is drawing too much current. Check all your connections and see if they're clean. What kind of battery did you buy? It should have been a stock replacement battery of the same size and current capacity.

Good Luck

Can i boost my motorcycle with my 4 cylinder car?

Yes you can but anytime you jump start your bike with either another vehicle or one of those "booster" battery chargers, you are risking damaging the electronics on your bike with a voltage spike. I'd prefer to use a slow charge battery charger overnight to build the battery up to the point where it will start the bike. If the battery is over a year old on your Fat Boy, take it out and have it load tested. The Softail bikes are extremely rough on batteries due to the heat and vibration they are subjected to inside the horseshoe oil tank.

Starter stays on only way to shut off is disconnt

You're solenoid is sticking for one reason or the other. When you put the starter fork assembly together make sure that the plunger operates freely by hand and moves the starter shaft in and out freely. Sometimes if the outer primary is not properly aligned, the shaft will bind when it comes out into engagement with the clutch ring gear. Usually, the inner primary has two small dowel pins in it to properly align the outer primary when it's installed but they are commonly removed and discarded. One other thing is that when you connect the wires to the solenoid, make sure the the large lower connection going to the starter is not touching the connector for the small center connector. If this happens, when the solenoid engages and voltage goes to the starter, it will also put voltage to the center connection keeping the solenoid engaged even after you let off on the start button. Make sure that small center connector does not touch either of the two large connections. Also check to see if your starter relay is wired correctly and that it's not sticking. If you need a wiring diagram, contact me directly at [email protected] and I'll send you one via e-mail in a jpg file.

How do i change the circuit breaker

Circuit breakers are very simple devices. They are small rectangular "cans" that have two screw post terminals on them. To change them, disconnect the battery and take the nuts off that hold the wires on. Pry the holder open just enough to pop the old circuit breaker out. Install the new circuit breaker in reverse order and reconnect the battery.

Brake light stays on all the time

There are two brake light switches on your bike. One for the front brake and it's located in the right handlebar switch housing and a pressure switch that is usually underneath the bike somewhere for the rear brake. You can find the rear brake light switch by following the metal brake line that comes out of the rear brake master cylinder until you come to a switch with some wires on it. On the older bikes, you could unplug the wires to see which switch was holding the light on. If the brake light goes off when you unplug the wires, it's this pressure switch that has the light held on. If the light stays on, it is the front brake light switch. On your bike, check for looseness in the front brake lever. If the lever and pin are worn, this will cause the lever to not depress the switch in the side of the switch housing facing the front brake lever. Your front brake switch may be broken. Odds are that the front brake switch is the one causing the problem.

Good Luck

Speedo drive unit need to

No, the drive unit is on the axle and is simply "pinched" in between the lower fork slider and the wheel. When you put the new one on, make sure you get the drive tab on the unit in the hole in the wheel.

How to adjust 1 inch

You adjust the cable the same way whether it's too long or the right length. It will still work as long as the "Freelength" is correct. If the cable is simply a 2" over length for your bike, it should work. Now, if it's too long and it's not simply a 2" over cable, it will not work. The cable must have the proper "freelength" which is the length from the end of the cable housing to the end of the cable itself.

When you press the starter

Clicking could be several things. That you have a click would indicate there is power to cause the click - probably the solenoid you hear. That is not to say your battery has sufficient power to kick the starter over.

I believe I would do a voltage test on the battery first off. Second thing I would do is measure the power on the starter side of the solenoid with the start button pressed. No power n the starter side? Replace the solenoid. You have not done something 'silly' like try to start in gear with the kick stand down (may not be a safety feature on your motorcycle) or try to start with the "kill" switch in stop position, have you? :-)

The starter may be getting power but not able to turn over because the engine will not turn over? What happens if you push the bike and pop the clutch? Will it start?

I would measure the voltage at the starter next with the starter button pressed. Is it proper?

The next think I would try is to run the starter by jumping from the battery directly to the starter. MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN NEUTRAL!!! Start?

Well now, you have voltage to the starter but it will not turn the engine over - the engine is not stuck - remove the starter and see if you can get it to run on the ground (or on your bench vice). Hopefully, you will find the starter will not run ... making this a relatively easy fix - replace the starter. If the starter runs and the "bendix" is good, this problem will require a second chapter to resolve.

Thanks for your question @ FixYa.com

I replaced the front brake

Did the original pads have anti rattle springs attached to them? If they did, you should have transferred them onto the new pads. The rattling isn't dangerous by any means, but it can be annoying.
