sounds like a plan - clean it all

Check the: Plugs Air Filter Fuel Filter Battery terminals Battery condition Choke.

Try unplugging one spark plug at a time and see if the engine will run on just left and just right cylinder. The cylinder thatwont run may have a clogged carburator or the valves may be too tight causing a low/no compression on that cyliner. Also a vacuum leak at an intake boot would cause a lean condition and a hot cylinder. Be certain you have spark at both ( properly gapped) spark plugs before **** these tests.

There are 3 components necessary for any motor to run-fuel, air(compression) and spark. Just because you have new plugs doesn't mean you have spark. Put them in the caps and ground them to the cylinder head and turn the motor over and look for the spark. If you have spark, install the plugs and plug wires, and turn it over several times. Pull the plugs and check to see if they have fuel on them. Run these 2 simple tests and get back to me with the results and I'll help you further. Good luck!

the valve clearances will be adjustable.
If it has shims for the adjustments, you need to measure the clearance, remove the shims that need adjustment(may need cams removed) and replace shims with thicker or thinner ones to correct clearances.
cam chain also needs regular replacement, and can cause rattling noises, as it may be 23 years old, this is also possible.

Do a compression test, if one cylinder is low on compression you could have tight valve clearence, a bent valve or a burnt out valve any one of these will cause your motor to back fire now & then at low rev's

Use SAE 15W40 for bikes from Castrol, BanRay or any motorbike oil brands. You need about 2.3 litre and a new oil filter suitable for your bike. The oil filter normally lives on the front part of you bike just ahead of your exhaust pipies.

if the airbox and intake boots are the same size then it should work, but your bike will run rich, you will need to re jet it.

check to see that lever isn't fouling anywhere on the way up, you may have to re-position the lever on the splines to sit lower
