1982 Honda FT 500 Questions & Answers
Why is starter not caching fly wheel on 82 honda ft500
Could be dry on the shaft so when the solenoid kicks in the gear does not throw out far enough to engage. Try removing the starter, you will see the gear and shaft it slides on, clean the shaft, then lubricate while moving the gear back and forth.

Your problem hopefully is simple to fix. Put the motor to top dead center on the compression stroke. Check the valve tolerances , make sure the exhaust is not too tight.
cold IN 0.10 mm (.004")
EX 0.10 mm (.004")
Also replace the spark plug cap and the spark plug. Some times popping or backfiring is caused by leaking exhaust gaskets from the head to the head pipe and some times the gasket between the head pipe and the muffler. If the valve adjustment, plug, and plug cap do not work, try the exhaust gaskets.
Took apart a honda ft500 single and can't find any
The timing marks are on both gears and look like very small triangles. And there should be a line on the opposite side.
Bring cylinder to top dead center - thats' the first timing mark. The lines on the bottom should be pointing up and down.

Try replacing all four spark plug caps. The two straight caps unscrew off of the end of the wires. The other two are attached to the wire. You may not be able to order them from Honda any more. You can purchase bulk copper spark plug wire and replace the wires and the caps right out of the coils. You will need to purchase two straight 5000 OHM NGK brand plug caps and two long 90 degree NGK brand spark plugs caps. They should cost around $5 each. Copper core plug wire in bulk is about $2 a foot. Install some new plugs and there is a good chance the poor running will be solved for under$30.

It sounds like you have a stripped spline collar on your rear wheel. The spline collar bolts on to the center of the rear wheel and slides over the spline shaft coming out of the final drive. If it is stripped the final drive will spin but the wheel wont.
You can also get a grinding sound if the u-joint in the final drive shaft has a bad bearing. The shaft and u-joint are only sold as an assembly and would probably have to be purchased used from a salvage operation.
Honda PC50 moped VIN decoder
To read the serial number on a Honda PC50 moped, follow these steps:
Locate the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): The VIN is a unique code that provides information about your moped. On a Honda PC50, you can find the VIN in the following places:
Under the Air Filter Cover: Look on the left-hand side, just above the engine. The VIN should be stamped there. It typically looks like this: PC50 - 1234567.
Frame Number: The frame number is another term for the VIN. It's usually located near the air filter body.
Decode the VIN: The VIN contains important details about your moped, including the year of manufacture. Here's how to interpret it:
The 9th digit of the VIN is a check digit.
The 10th digit represents the year code. For example:
A = 1980
B = 1981
C = 1982
D = 1983
E = 1984
F = 1985
G = 1986
H = 1987
J = 1988
K = 1989
L = 1990
M = 1991
N = 1992
P = 1993
R = 1994
S = 1995
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998
X = 1999
1 = 2000
2 = 2001
3 = 2002
Note that if your scooter was manufactured between February 1986 and February 1987, it's likely to be a '87 model;
Additional Resources:
If you have the full VIN, you can use the NHTSA VIN decoder to get detailed information about your moped.
Alternatively, you can call Honda with your VIN, and they will provide you with the necessary information.

Honda 500 TRX fa6 has PS on the dash….what does it mean ?
The Power Steering has failed. There has been a factory recall for a suddenly failing electrical steering shaft, that could cause the rider to loose control. This does not have to be your problem but anyhow either the electronics or the pump failed. Error codes or messages usually have to be erased by a simple reset procedure or disconnecting a plug, after repairs are done.
