I'm not sure whet the factory battery is rated at because they don't give you the specs on it. I would think somewhere around 300 CCA would be required. Your best bet is to get the best AGM battery you can find. The H-D AGM battery is a good battery and is priced competitively with others on the market. I've had good luck with them.
If you purchase a battery tender or one of the "smart" battery chargers and plug it in after every ride, you'll be surprised at just how long the battery will last. I had one of these batteries for five years and it was still starting my bike well but I replaced it anyway. I absolutely hate having a battery let me down.
Not to sure if there are bullitins out on this. I would pull your fairing and check for any exposed or pinched wiring that is visible, if not, unfortunately you may need to buy a new radio, as it may be shorting internally, and unless you know someone that can fix it, youll have to get a new unit.
It's not difficult at all to install lifters in a Shovelhead. Just take the pushrods out, lift the hydraulic units out, and take the tappet blocks up. Sometimes, if the valve seats and valves are badly worn, the pushrods can be tough to get out as they won't adjust short enough. You'll have to pry them out with a small screwdriver. You'll have to readjust the pushrods once you get the new tappets installed. The question is, why are you installing new tappets? If you have a bad tappet, it's probably ruined the cam as well. If a roller locks up it will gall the cam lobe that it runs on which means the cam will have to be replaced as well.
