Dirty fuel you need to pull your idel jet out and clean it

Remove the float bowl on the carb. Hold the carb upside down, the set the floats level.

Here is what you need... get it while you can!!!! 1980 1987 Kawasaki KD80 Repair Manual Clymer M350 9 Service Shop GarageHey Dean, If the floats are plastic, they are preset,if the floats are separate, riding on metal "pins" and each float arm must be separately.. you will have to get a manual or http://www.mikuni.com/ and find the info you need.. if they are too low you will lean out.. if they are too high you will get gas overflow...(If you can't wait.. set them so they "FLOAT" high in the bowl..).. it should run ok, just leak gas out the overflow hose..

Each carb has a small vacuum port on the side above the float bowl, you adjust the idle stop screw to set the tune and sync the carbs. Leave the air fuel mixture screws alone.

remove carb, remove float bowl, remove float pin, install new float needle, reverse to install

couple things to consider. the 42 mikuni is an excellent carb. superior to S&S carbs. inspect your cable,accel and decell. also your hand throttle where the spool is located { cable attachment} could be dry and binding. remove the cover and apply grease and work it back and forth. inspect the cable connection on the side of the carb. make sure it is not cocked on the carb. this sounds like a linkage issue. it's very unusual for the smooth bore to bind inside the bore.

Many things can cause this; check the following. 1. trash(including rust in the tank if metal) in the tank/carb. If the carb set for more than 6 months it may need the fuel system cleaned out(includes the carb). Putting a filter in the system will not take care of the rust problem in most cases. If the tank is metal and has rust it will need a tank liner kit like the brand "kreem" or the equivalent. 2. the needle/seat combination and/or float is incorrectly set or bad causing that fuel level to get high in the bowl. Check the float height according to the manual or replace the float/needle/seat. 3. bad seat o ring if it has one and also a petcock that does not shut off. If you can jog the seat around in the carb, then the o ring is probably bad. If you disconnect the fuel line from the carb and gas still comes out, the petcock is most likely bad or it has trash in it.

If it has a needle jet clip it will be located inside the slide for the carburetor. If you remove the slide from the carb the needle will still be attached. Look inside the top of the slide and it will be held down by a screw/plate/hex retainer or other means. If this is a single carb engine then it will be ok to remove it but if this is a multiple carb engine, then the carb sync will be disturbed and most likely need to be reset.

buy a shop book online or sec629 in public lib may have one--the bottom of the float is common on asianbikes

The idle air screw is on the side of carb. the high speed requires a special 90 degree screwdriver. This allows access to the high speed jet which is on the bottom of carb...Adjust idle screw till smooth idle is obtained. Adjust high speed while running to obtain the highest RPM.

float level is incorrect or float is hanging

simple fix, replace the rope.
