Sounds like a broken cable to the throttle body. Check that both cables are intact.

There is no cambelt on the boxer motors. Cams are chain driven.

ABS sensors are at the wheels - the look at a notched ring and take their impulses from that ring. Find the ring and you'll find the sensor (near the caliper)

Check that your brake light bulbs are good (not blown) and that they operate correctly (stepping on the rear brake operates the bulb and it comes off after, same for the front.) Any malfunction of this system will prevent the cruise control from operating properly. Also some after market additional brake lights installed may do the same.

With everything undone use a rubber or plastic mallet to slide the forks out

You have a final drive leak that is accumulating in the "accordion". You need to replace the output seal on the FD. There should be no oil in the "accordion"
