Question edited for clarity. Question moved to model category. You have a leak, you just need to find it. Look for leaks in the hoses. Do a pressure test. The most common reasons a Volvo S40 has a coolant leak are loose hose connections, a broken radiator, or a failed water pump.

As the driver's door is the most used side it can be just worn or a part broken, best would be to remove the interior panel and check that the inside lever is still connected to the lock usually there is a thin metal bar that connects the two. If it is connected and you pull the lever and the bar doesn't move or only slightly this indicates you need a new inside lever, if the bar does move freely then you have to look at the lock mechanism.

Possible water pump failure. Was temp guage showing "hot" ? , if not maybe coolant sensor issue. Had the car just been driven hard ? Any pressure in coolant expansion tank ?

Instructions 1 Make sure all doors are closed, as well as the hood. Make sure the tailgate or trunk is locked. Get into the car and lock all doors. 2 Insert the key and turn it from the insertion position (position I) to the "on" position (position II - not the "start" position) five times. In other words, all the dash lights come on, but the engine doesn't start. When you turn the key to ON the fifth time, leave it there.
