2004 vw jetta won't start and the malfunction light is on. This has happened and we tak it to the shop, they can;t find the problem and then the Jetta starts up. It may be months, weeks of a few days and it'll happen again. When turning the key, the headlights will come on, but to starter noise is present. In fact, there is no noise

I know that some european cars have an "immobilizer" as part of their anti-theft system that frequently malfunctions in this way. Have it swapped out if your car has such a module.An independent shop may be better for this.There's a relay called "Relay 109" that may cause this also-it's only in Jetta TDIs.Here is part of a post from a dissatisfied owner if you continue having problems:I had TWO of these bought back by Yugowagen and you can do the same-WITHOUT an attorney!! I had the 2 cars for six months and over 12K miles total and was not charged a dime for use!! They gave me the cash I paid in, the value of my trade, and the amount of the payments made, and paid off the loan balance!! If the S40 sedan and V40 wagon still have the $4K incentive you can get a killer deal!! My car stickered for $29,385 and I got it for $23,500 !! And the car is a much more refined vehicle than the Yugowagen! Good luck!! And, by the way, VW DOES offer loaner cars-the dealer must call the district office to get it authorized which is no problem. I had 5 loaners during my 6 month nightmare.
