Can i change the discs and pads on a 2003 jag s type 4.2 myself. I have been informed that only jag can do it because the pistons need resetting in the calipers, coz its an electronic brake system?? Is this true??

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Remove the caliper flow bolt and the 2 copper washers. Discard the copper washers.

    1. Compress the disc brake pistons.
      • Use a wood block or used brake pad to protect pistons and boots.

        • Use a suitable brake parts cleaner to clean the brake disc and hub surfaces.

    I am changing my rotors and pads on my s-type jag 3lits To compress the piston on the caliper i need a special tool to compress and turn.Can you tell me how.

    Some old school mechanics still use large channel locks to carefully depress the piston...Your local auto parts store will lend you the recommended tool to compress and turn the piston...Hope this helps.

    I'm assuming you have Lucas calipers, On that type of caliper you have to depress the piston and at the same time turn it clockwise.
    You have to have the bleeder screw open when you do this.
    I took a large size C-clamp to clamp down on the piston,then used a giant pair of channel locks to turn the piston.
    You have to keep adding more pressure to the clamp while doing this it's somewhat awkward.
    You must screw the piston all the way down for the new pads to fit.

    Need help changing brake pads and routers on 2003

    Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1/2 full. Discard the removed fluid.
    1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Front brake caliper guide pin bolts
    • Brake caliper by slowly sliding it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.
    1. If necessary, compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.
    2. Outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.
    • Inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity
  • To install:
    1. Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.
    2. If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.
    3. Install or connect the following:
      • New inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.
      • Outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly
      • Brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter
      • Caliper guide pin bolts and torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 2002–04 models or 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) on 2005 models
      • Front. Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.
    4. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road-test the vehicle.

    Our Jaguar dealership wants to charge me $2,400

    I had mine done in local repair shop in the UK using Jag parts came in well under $600 pads only (not rotors). At your price i'd do it myself. I have put the details for 2003 X Type up on my website http://www.blujag.co.uk/frontpad.php its rough and ready but hope it helps. Jag recomend use of special service tools 206-080 caliper piston retractor and 303-588 damper remover ,

    Need to change rear brake pads

    just like any other disc bake job colapse pistons replace pads just standard hand tools will do the job.be carefull when you put the bolts back in that hold the caliper they strip real real easy

    Anything unique or special doing a front brake job on 2003 xj8?

    if you have replaced pads on other cars a jag is no different,

    Remove roadwheel. Check brake disc (rotor) for adequate thickness and absence of warp, and replace if necessary.

    Unbolt the caliper guide pins using a 7mm allen key. The caliper can now be moved to one side and the pads pulled out. Avoid putting any strain on the caliper brake fluid pipe.

    Put the caliper approximately back in position and undo the bleed nipple. Attach a piece of rubber pipe looped upward then leading to a jar on the ground, or use a brake bleeding kit. This will prevent air getting into the system. Releasing fluid when pushing the pistons back is significantly easier than pushing the fluid back up through the valve block and avoid risk of damaging or contaminating the sensitive ABS valves.

    It is now necessary to push the piston back to be flush with the cylinder, so allowing sufficient space to install the new pads. To not exert force directly onto the piston, but use the old pad instead. Pulling the caliper toward you will push the piston back, as will levering between pad and disc with a stout piece of wood. Do not use metal which would damage the surface of the disc. Tighten the bleed screw and remove the old pad when the piston is pushed back.

    Clean the caliper and coat the guide pins, piston head and areas of the caliper in contact with the pads with copper gresase. This will make removal next time that much easier!

    Insert the new pads and rebolt the caliper in place.

    Excessive wear on 1997 s type jags rear brakes

    Unfortunatly this is normal, nothing can be done about it. Get pads checked every 15,000 miles to save discs.

    yes and no, you need a 4 inch or larger C clamp to push the wheel cylinder pistons in, other than that maybe a torx socket, have you ever changed any front disc brake pads before?

    Changing rear brake pads on a 2003 jeep liberty

    No, do not open the brake fluid lines. If the piston has groves cut in to the face of it, you will need a special compressor for it. Most new cars with 4 wheel discs use this type of piston. Instead of just pushing the piston in (as you would on older style calipers) you actually need to turn it clockwise while you push it in. They sell the tool at auto parts stores.
