When making tight turns, the front end pops and kind of feels like the wheels are in a bind or brakes are dragging. Doesn't do it when wheels are straight.
Re: 1996 grand cherokee-6cyl When making tight turns,
Hi, the likely problem is a worn out CV joint on one of your axles. Check for a torn boot on either axle. Once a toot tears open, dirt gets in and wears out the joint. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT ON THE TOP OF THE STEERING BOX FOR THAT ITS THE PART THAT THE STEERING CLOUOM GOES INTO LOOK ON THE TOP OF IT YOU;LL ALITTLE STRIGHT HEADSCREW WITH A NUT THREADED ON TOIT LOSEN THE NUT AND TURN THE SCREW IN TILL WHEEL FEELS TIGHTBUT DON;T OVER TIGHTEN YOU SHOULD HAVE AN INCH OR SO OF FREE PLAY IN STEERING WHEEL THEN TIGHTEN THE NUT
Before you look at that, check the front end. With the front wheels on the ground, wiggle them from side to side with some force and see if there is any freeplay. If there is it is probably one of the ball joints that has worn. This is quite dangerous and needs to be attended to immediately ut the cost of repairs in not high. Whilst you are checking the front end, make sure that all the mountings are tight. Anything loose can make some very interesting sounds. Another thing you can look at is the u/j on th propshaft. If you get under the car and grab the propshaft, and move it from side to side in the direction it would be going if the car was running and you can hear it clunking or there is any freeplay, that could be your problem, but the noise would be coming more from the middle of the car.
sounds like a bad cv joint in one (or both) of the front axles. is the popping sound more prevalent when in reverse, with the wheel turned? if so, i'd assume that it is a bad cv joint and one or both front axles will need to be replaced.
