Try a can of Lucas Transmission Slip - 100M - see if that helps. Something is sticking in there. This might free it up.

if you do by pass it i would leave the turbo in operation and just remove the hose of the inter cooler and put a air filter in place of the inter cooler.

Do you have the selector on recirculate or fresh air in?
Are you trying to use the air conditioning unit and not getting cold air? Than the freon will need to be recharged.

THE PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY A WORN-OUT THROWOUT BEARING

if your exhaust system is not up to factory spec this will cause idle and rough running conditions,as well as the poor fuel economy, this is due to the sensors not getting accurate readings and sending skewed info to the onboard computer, (the exhaust system has as many as 3 sensors, although i think yours has only one, if you can also remove the catylitic converter, you will get more power./better fuel economy

I Would Suggest That You Complete A Engine Cylinder Leak Down Test.....(not A Compression Test But A Leak Down Test) this will tell you if you have internal problems....possible worn rings or a burnt valve(s) I would use a smoke machine to check for vacuum leaks also. Good Luck

This is a common problem with all models of volvo, with the non digital odometer  pre 1998,, there is a tiny nylon gear deep inside the odometer that needs to be replaced. Your dealer will not fix it, but will put in a new one for you as the cost of fixing in labour is more than a new one,, My solution is much cheeper,, I have
